Hargreaves Lansdown, the UK's largest retail investment platform, launches crypto ETN trading
Hargreaves Lansdown, the UK's largest retail investment platform, has opened up cryptocurrency exchange-traded notes (Crypto ETN) trading to eligible investors, including bitcoin-linked and Ethereum exchange-traded notes on the platform for use by millions of retail savers. The move came into effect in early September 2026, nearly a year after the UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) lifted a ban on retail crypto ETNs and about 11 months after the company first revealed plans to enter the market. For Hargreaves Lansdown, the launch marks an important step forward for its business from its traditional fund, equity and pension areas to providing digital asset exposure through regulated stock exchange tools.
The operating mechanism of crypto ETN products
Unlike purchasing cryptocurrencies directly, investors on the platform hold listing tools that track the price of Bitcoin or Ethereum without having a cryptographic wallet or private key. The underlying assets are held by regulated custodians, and the notes are traded on the London Stock Exchange like ordinary stocks. Access is not universally open: Hargreaves Lansdown limits the product's customer base to certified high net worth individuals and restricted investors who commit to investing no more than 10% of their net worth, and each buyer must first pass a suitability assessment. In addition, as required by the FCA, a 24-hour cooling-off period is required before any transaction is completed.
From cautious wait and see to gradual adoption
The launch reverses the platform's long-standing cautious stance. Previously, the platform has guided customers to avoid direct exposure to cryptocurrency risks, but regulators have allowed professional and qualified investors to participate in trading cryptocurrency ETNs, paving the way for traditional brokers to participate in the market. Hargreaves Lansdown is not the only platform that sees these products as a bridge: 21Shares has previously introduced the first batch of crypto ETNs to the London Stock Exchange, laying the foundation for mainstream platforms to follow suit. The company's own materials highlight the risks, warning that the notes are not protected by the Financial Services Compensation Plan (FSCS) and investors should be prepared to lose all their funds.
Signaling significance for UK crypto market access
For UK investors, this launch is the latest signal that regulated crypto exposure is shifting from professional exchanges to familiar investment platforms. The move follows broader efforts to provide compliant access to digital assets for UK savers, even as policymakers continue to shape the new UK crypto framework and increasingly stringent tax reporting requirements. By offering crypto ETN side by side with its traditional products, Hargreaves Lansdown is betting that a custodial, stock-packed model will attract investors who want price exposure but are unwilling to bear the burden of managing private keys.
