Robinhood's cryptocurrency trading volume rebounds, with Bitstamp leading the way
In August, Robinhood's cryptocurrency trading volume increased 61% month-on-month to US$17.5 billion. However, total activity remains below 38% of August 2025 levels. Bitstamp processed $10.1 billion in transactions, accounting for 58% of the total cryptocurrency volume in August. Robinhood App processed the remaining $7.4 billion.
In August, Robinhood's event contract trading volume reached 4.7 billion. Although monthly activity fell by 23%, it increased 15 times compared with a year ago. Total assets of the platform increased by 26% year-on-year to US$384 billion. The number of deposit-depositing customers reached 28.6 million, and the margin balance reached US$21.5 billion.
In August, Robinhood's cryptocurrency trading volume climbed 61% month-on-month to US$17.5 billion, reversing the previous slowdown on the platform. Of this, Bitstamp processed $10.1 billion, while Robinhood App generated $7.4 billion. Despite this, total cryptocurrency turnover fell 38% from August 2025, indicating that the rebound has not yet reached last year's pace. Robinhood released the data on Thursday.
The report also shows rapid growth beyond digital assets. Customers traded 4.7 billion event contracts, 15 times the total for the same period last year. At the same time, platform assets reached US$384 billion, a year-on-year increase of 26%. These data show that the rebound in cryptocurrencies is occurring in a broader context of business operations, covering areas such as stocks, options, margin loans, cash, futures and forecast markets.
Robinhood reported that cryptocurrency turnover in July was US$10.9 billion, the lightest month since April. An increase of US$6.6 billion in August increased daily nominal trading volume from US$352 million to US$565 million. As a result, Robinhood's cryptocurrency trading volume quickly recovered within a month, although the year-on-year comparison remained negative.
Bitstamp's transaction volume reached US$10.1 billion, a 53% increase from US$6.6 billion in July. The exchange provided 58% of the post-merger August total. Robinhood completed its acquisition of Bitstamp in June 2025 and began to include customer cryptocurrencies it holds there into platform assets.
Activity from the main app grew faster in August. Application-based turnover increased 72% to $7.4 billion from $4.3 billion in July. Its average daily trading volume reached US$239 million, compared with Bitstamp's US$326 million. However, annual transaction volume for apps fell by 46%, while Bitstamp's transaction volume fell by 30%.
Robinhood's cryptocurrency trading volume also excludes activity recorded on Robinhood Chain. The company excludes the network's turnover from total brokerage and exchange transactions. This distinction ensures that blockchain activity does not change the $17.5 billion operating metric.
Overall account data was also strengthened during the same period. The total assets of the platform increased by 8% from July and 26% from August 2025. Depositing customers reached 28.6 million, an increase of approximately 120,000 customers per month and an increase of 1.9 million customers per year. Robinhood marks these monthly data as preliminary and unaudited.
Margin balances increased 4% from July to US$21.5 billion. This figure marks a year-on-year increase of 72%. Cash and deposit balances also increased 37% year-on-year to US$19.6 billion. As a result, Robinhood's cryptocurrency trading volume has also recovered as assets, number of customers and loan balances have increased.
Event contracts expand, lawmakers review trading rules
In August, Robinhood's event contract trading volume reached 4.7 billion. Activity fell 23% from 6.1 billion contracts in July, but increased 15-fold year-on-year. The average daily total was 152 million contracts, down from 197 million contracts in July.
Each contract is usually settled at US$1 or nil. When the buyer's chosen outcome occurs, they receive $1, and the wrong position is voided and no payment is made. Available markets cover topics such as elections, Fed decisions and sporting events.
Robinhood distributes event contracts through regulated exchanges, including Kalshi and ForecastEx. Its joint venture with Susquehanna International Group, Rothera, was launched in June. In the company's second-quarter results, the venue had processed more than 3.5 billion contracts.
Revenue data shows the increasing weight of the product. In the second quarter, Robinhood incident contracts generated revenue of $156 million, more than ten times the same period last year. During this period, cryptocurrency trading revenue fell 38% to US$100 million. Total quarterly revenue reached a record $1.31 billion.
Meanwhile, lawmakers continue to review who can trade political contracts and which markets platforms can list. The PREDICT Act would restrict senior officials, legislators, staff members, spouses and dependents from trading contracts related to specific political events.
State authorities and exchange operators also dispute whether certain sports contracts fall under federal derivatives regulations or state gambling laws. Robinhood lists its products as exchange-traded contracts for qualified users, rather than traditional sports betting bets.
Despite a 61% rebound in August, Robinhood's cryptocurrency trading volume is still lower than the previous year's level. Securities lending income fell 32% year-on-year to $36 million.
