Why did Robinhood's cryptocurrency trading volume rebound in August?
In August, Robin Hood's cryptocurrency trading activity rebounded significantly. Total transaction volume between its consumer apps and the Bitstamp platform reached US$17.5 billion, a 61% increase from July. The rebound suggests an improvement in monthly trading activity, but overall levels are still well below the same period last year. Despite the increased short-term momentum, total crypto trading volume fell by 38% compared with August 2025, showing year-on-year weakness.
Among them, Bitstamp contributed most of August's trading volume, reaching US$10.1 billion. This figure increased by 53% month-on-month, but it was still lower than 30% in the same period last year. At the same time, Robin Hood App's own crypto transaction volume recorded US$7.4 billion, a significant increase of 72% month-on-month; however, its year-on-year decline was even more significant, down 46% from August 2025. Data shows that both segments of Robin Hood's cryptocurrency business benefited from a stronger trading environment in August, while Bitstamp continues to account for a large share of overall trading volume.
The importance of Bitstamp to Robin Hood is becoming increasingly prominent
Since the acquisition was completed in June 2025, Bitstamp has quickly become a core part of Robin Hood's crypto business. As early as the second quarter, Bitstamp was already a major contributor to Robin Hood's crypto trading activity: of the total $40 billion in crypto trading volume that quarter, Bitstamp contributed $22 billion, compared with the Robin Hood App's $18 billion. August data continued this trend, with Bitstamp accounting for approximately 58% of total combined crypto trading volume.
Bitstamp's contribution has given Robin Hood a broader footprint in the institutional and international crypto trading space than before when it relied solely on retail brokerage apps. This diversification is also crucial because Bitstamp and Robin Hood Consumer Platform's trading models are not exactly the same. In August, Bitstamp's year-on-year decline was small, which provided some stability to the overall business while Robin Hood App activity was still significantly lower than last year.
Investor Inspiration
Robin Hood's August crypto data reflects an improvement in short-term trading activity, but a year-on-year decline suggests trading volumes have not returned to 2025 levels. Since Bitstamp currently contributes more than half of the value of crypto transactions, its importance has become increasingly prominent.
Why did rising trading volume not solve the revenue problem?
For Robin Hood's crypto business, transaction volume is only part of the picture. The company reported $100 million in crypto trading revenue in the second quarter, a 38% decrease from approximately $160 million in the same period last year. This decline occurred even though Bitstamp brought substantial increase in trading volume, indicating that higher consolidated turnover did not automatically translate into a considerable increase in trading revenue.
This difference may stem from different distribution of customer groups, product portfolios and fee structures. Although Bitstamp's huge size has significantly expanded Robin Hood's crypto business in terms of transaction size, its economic model is different from retail transactions performed through the Robin Hood App. Therefore, for investors, revenue conversion rate is as important a measure as headline trading volume. The 61% month-on-month increase in August is a positive sign for activity, but future earnings reports will reveal whether stronger trading ultimately translates into higher crypto trading revenue.
What does the August report mean for Robin Hood's overall business?
Crypto assets remain an important part of Robin Hood's business, but the company's second-quarter results show that its earnings are becoming less dependent on digital asset trading. Crypto trading revenue fell 38% year-on-year, but was offset by growth in event contracts, options and stocks businesses, helping Robin Hood achieve record quarterly revenue and profits. This provides the company with a greater buffer to absorb the impact of the crypto trading downturn while retaining upside potential as digital asset trading accelerates.
As a result, the situation in August showed a mixed but positive trend: both Bitstamp and Robin Hood App, crypto activity recovered strongly from the trough in July, and Bitstamp continues to maintain its role as the main source of trading volume. At the same time, the significant year-on-year decline also shows that business activity is still lower than the level of a year ago. In addition, the reported figures do not include transaction volume from the "Robinhood Chain", which means monthly operating data does not cover all parts of the company's expanding digital asset infrastructure.
