The Ethereum Foundation's "Trillion-Dollar Security" initiative announced the allocation of a grant to the Press Freedom Foundation to support the work of the WEBCAT project. WEBCAT is an open source project designed to help browsers verify website code against signed lists.
According to the foundation's August 5 announcement, the funds will be used to support a verification library that can be integrated with the Ethereum wallet, covering Chromium browser research, integration support, independent audits and proposed standardization work.
Focus on Front-End Integrity
The Foundation points out that there is a gap between encrypting website connections and verifying that code delivered by a website is consistent with code approved by the developer. It said the attacked web interface could tamper with collection addresses or present users with signature requests that differ from what appears on the interface.
WEBCAT stands for "Web-based Code Assurance and Transparency" and is designed to allow browsers to compare resources delivered by registered websites with a list of signatures. The announcement stated that its current Alpha version of Firefox extension blocks pages and warns users when verification fails.
Wallets and apps still needed
This allocation will not automatically protect all wallets. The foundation said wallet extensions need to integrate the library, while application teams need to register their domain names and provide a signature list each time they publish.
This distinction is critical: the announcement funds development and promotion efforts, rather than claiming that all Ethereum interfaces are now protected by the mechanism.
Relationship with clear signatures
The foundation said the proposed integration would complement its "clear signature" efforts. Clear signatures are designed to help users understand what they are approving, while WEBCAT work is designed to verify the integrity of the front end of a registered application.
Theannouncement defines front-end tampering and supply chain risks as problem areas. This is no substitute for users checking transaction details themselves, or for teams maintaining a secure application infrastructure.
