Monad proposed an upgrade plan for account authentication: the address remains unchanged, and the key can be exchanged.
Today, once you lose the wallet private key, users may permanently lose account access; and upgrading to a stronger security plan usually means completely abandoning the original address. According to related reports, Monad has proposed a transformative proposal aimed at breaking this restriction-allowing accounts to change the key that controls the account while leaving the address unchanged.
Summary of Proposal
The draft, titled "Flexible and Upgradable Account Authentication," separates the wallet's permanent address from the credentials used to authorize transactions. Users can add, replace or revoke various certificates, including traditional encryption keys, mobile access keys, and multi-signature mechanisms or encryption technologies specifically designed to withstand quantum computer attacks, without having to migrate assets to a new account.
This design also allows users to recover accounts after losing keys. For example, you can arrange for two trusted third parties to jointly authorize the installation of a replacement key, or convert an existing account into a multi-signature wallet. The proposal's authors describe it as a path to "user-friendly solutions such as native support quantum accounts, social recovery, and passkeys."
Early drafts
Authors Kushal Babel and Jan Camenisch said that the current version only covers the overall design framework, and detailed technical implementation specifications still need to be written later. If the proposal is finally adopted, existing accounts can operate as usual because the plan changes the account authentication method rather than the network consensus mechanism. This difference is critical and means that the upgrade can be deployed without coordinating a unified migration across the network.
The issue of quantum resistance is increasingly becoming the focus of the industry agenda: Bitcoin developers are discussing how to protect early tokens whose public keys have been exposed, and Ethereum has made post-quantum security a formal research priority in the areas of wallets, pledges and smart contracts.
Monad's status
Monad is one of the most high-profile projects in 2025, having previously raised US$19 million in 2023 and US$225 million in a round of financing in 2024. Its DeFi ecosystem is currently worth approximately US$939 million, of which approximately US$732 million is stablecoins. The proposal is part of a broader effort to push blockchain into the post-quantum era and aims to provide account-level solutions rather than network-wide upgrades. Since this change is optional, users can adopt the new authentication mechanism at their own pace without waiting for the overall change at the consensus level.
