ETH Binance co-founder Zhao Changpeng (CZ) said at the "Bitcoin Asia 2026" conference held in Hong Kong on August 27 that Bitcoin (BTC) may surpass the market value of gold in the next bull market at the earliest. Zhao Changpeng pointed out that the current market value of gold is about 10 times that of Bitcoin, but he believes that this gap will gradually narrow as more investors turn to digital reserve assets.
"I think Bitcoin will definitely become more important than gold," Zhao Changpeng told the audience during a discussion titled "Bitcoin Century." He described Bitcoin as "a much better asset than gold" and predicted that Bitcoin would surpass the market value of gold "much sooner" than many expected. On August 27, Bitcoin traded at approximately $79700, rising 1.5% in 24 hours, after rising more than 25% in the previous week. During the same period, gold prices climbed to more than $4600.
A government shift will happen, but it will take time.
Zhao Changpeng admitted that sovereign countries 'use of Bitcoin as a reserve asset will not be realized anytime soon. Major countries have established a complete gold valuation, holding and trading system, and replacing this infrastructure will take years. "The transition to Bitcoin will not happen overnight," he said. He suggested that the formula for the government's cryptocurrency reserve is: select the five non-stablecoin cryptocurrencies with the largest market value and weigh them according to market value. He pointed out that the resulting portfolio contains approximately 50% Bitcoin, 10% to 20% Ethereum (ETH), and part of BNB. He added that his suggestion was "somewhat selfish" because BNB was a native token for the exchange he founded.
Zhao Changpeng also discussed the integration of artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency. He said that the adoption of artificial intelligence in the cryptocurrency field is likely to start with stablecoins. Once the system can accept stablecoins for payments, the integration of Bitcoin will naturally follow suit. He also mentioned that he has communicated with several large artificial intelligence companies about token issuance, pointing out that funding requirements for large-scale computing infrastructure can reach trillions of dollars. One model currently under discussion involves "data center tokens" that in the future will give holders computing access, rewards or model subscriptions to services.
Artificial intelligence will change transactions first and then payments
Zhao Changpeng believes that artificial intelligence-assisted transactions will develop before artificial intelligence-driven payments. Trading requires collecting a large amount of information and responding quickly, which is ideal for artificial intelligence systems. In contrast, consumers can already complete the payment themselves after the artificial intelligence agent identifies the transaction. He estimates that artificial intelligence can increase transaction efficiency by about ten times.
Zhao Changpeng, who resigned as CEO of Binance in 2023 after pleading guilty to U.S. money laundering charges, summarized the long-term price outlook. Bitcoin reaching $1 million "will be a good thing, and it will definitely happen," he said, adding that the timeline will be "much faster" than 25 years. He said reaching this price level was not as important as expanding Bitcoin's practical uses, noting that large-scale payments and inclusion of pension fund reserves would be milestones that define Bitcoin's long-term success.
