Polymarket launches perpetual contracts to enter the leveraged derivatives market
On September 3, prediction market platform Polymarket officially launched perpetual contract products, marking the transformation of its business from the leveraged derivatives sector dominated by professional exchanges. An important step forward. The company issued a statement on its official X account (formerly Twitter) saying that Polymarket Perps is now online and supports up to 20 times leverage, covering multiple asset classes such as cryptocurrencies, stocks, and commodities, and emphasized that the product has the deepest liquidity and lowest fees.
Introduce a two-way long-short trading and funding rate mechanism
Perpetual contracts allow traders to leverage long or short assets without having to set an expiration date. Polymarket integrates this structure into its existing user interface. According to its product introduction page, funding rates are regularly transferred between long and short positions to ensure that the contract price anchors the price of its underlying reference asset. As long as traders have sufficient margin, positions can remain open.
This announcement did not disclose minimum margin requirements, clearing thresholds or a complete fee schedule. These parameters will determine the platform's competitiveness compared to traditional crypto derivatives exchanges, and are also key unknowns that have yet to be clarified in the product introduction.
Single interface covers four major asset classes
The market grid lists 67 active contracts, covering individual stocks such as Tesla and Nvidia, crypto assets such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, major indices such as the S & P 500 and Nasdaq 100, and commodities such as gold, silver and WTI crude oil. This broad coverage positions Polymarket's perpetual contracts as a comprehensive derivatives service rather than just a trading venue for cryptocurrencies.
The move follows the wave of industry leverage expansion, including Kraken's recent increase in margin leverage for ETH/USD to 20 times. Polymarket is unique in that it provides a unified interface that covers stocks, indices, commodities and cryptocurrencies simultaneously, rather than focusing on a single asset pair.
Leverage expands platform exposure
Polymarket has accumulated a large number of users with event contracts and reported monthly trading volume of up to US$25.7 billion in the first quarter of 2026. Perpetual contracts introduce recurring-fee products that are comparable to traditional derivatives exchanges, but leverage also concentrates the trader's risk of loss and increases the severity of the consequences of any mistakes in pricing, clearing or funding rates.
said the service is only available in international jurisdictions permitted by law, but has not specified which markets are restricted. Until Polymarket publishes full risk control and qualification terms, this launch should be seen as a new product launch rather than a final completion of its comprehensive expansion into all geographical areas as implied by the grid.
