ZEC Zcash miners accelerate their migration to Zallet, bid farewell to old node software
More and more Zcash miners are gradually abandoning traditional zcashd software and switching to Zallet wallets designed to replace this decades-old node software. At the "Arborist Call" developer conference hosted by @ZcashFoundation, developers reported on Thursday that some miners had fully completed the switch and that the migration process was progressing smoothly.
zcashd officially enters the end of its life cycle
This transition is imminent and long delays are no longer allowed. zcashd has welcomed the final End-of-Support node at the block height of 3,417,100 on July 18, 2026. At this moment, all unmodified zcashd 6.20.0 nodes automatically stop running. The software no longer supports the NU6.3 network upgrade implemented shortly thereafter.
For users who have not yet completed the migration, officials are now guiding them to switch to two alternatives: Zebra, a consensus node based on the Rust language developed by @ZcashFoundation; and Zallet, which is used when relying on the built-in wallet function.
Zallet: A full-node wallet designed to replace the zcashd wallet
Zallet is a full-node Zcash wallet written in the Rust language. It was originally designed to be a direct replacement for the zcashd wallet. The software is still in beta, and developers have warned that Breaking Changes may occur at any time. Therefore, users are required to make a backup of old wallet.dat files before importing them into Zallet.
Progress in Beta 3 fixes and security review
When Beta 3 was released, issues reported by miners in early testing were fixed. Least Authority, a security company that has long been responsible for auditing Zcash components, has now entered a second round of security review, focusing on verifying whether previously discovered problems have been properly resolved.
In addition, the Least Authority recently completed a broader AI-assisted security audit of multiple critical repositories in the Zcash ecosystem, funded by a Zcash community grant, with the final report delivered in May 2026.
The meeting also pointed out that the migration tool chain is becoming increasingly mature. The migrate-zcashd-wallet command converts an old version of the wallet.dat file to Zallet.db format. The team has been encouraging the community to conduct extensive testing on the main and test networks to verify the accuracy of wallet balances and migration processes before full roll-out.
Although Zallet is still under active development, the entire ecosystem is rapidly moving towards a full transition given the mandatory closure of zcashd, continuous improvements in the tool chain, and the imminent completion of a security review.
