Maimaps launches "Apple-class" precision routing API to empower logistics platforms

Every place in Nigeria has an identity

Today, every place in Nigeria has a unique identity. However, the more difficult question always remains: How to find the best way to get there? Maiaddy said it is answering this question today.

The Aba-based location services company is expanding Maimaps from a search and navigation layer based on Loccodes to a routing engine for logistics platforms, delivery services and travel companies. The same identifier that tells riders the location of the store can now be entered into a route request to calculate the method of arrival, estimated time of arrival, and re-plan the route when the road ahead disappears.

Maiaddy founder and CEO Obinna Onyejeli summed up this ambition in one sentence: "When you build a routing system on top of Loccodes, every coordinate is trustworthy, every route is calculated based on real data, and every estimated arrival time has practical significance." "We could have developed it as a stand-alone product, but we chose to build it into Maimaps because a geolocation platform that can't tell you how to get to a place is only half done," he said.

Nigeria's logistics and travel markets are growing far faster than its underlying address infrastructure. The dispatch room still follows the process operators have become accustomed to: written addresses, two or three confirmation calls, voice messages, landmark references, and expectations that the rider and customer describe the same landmark.

Onyejeli pointed out: "Distribution companies make multiple confirmations before dispatching riders because they cannot trust the written address to accurately locate the right location. Drivers rely on voice messages and landmark descriptions for navigation. Route planning is often manual or relies on tools designed for markets where addresses are standardized and reliable."

Maiaddy's core logic: Layered construction

Maiaddy's view is that the technology stack must be built in order. Loccodes, launched in November 2024, aims to solve the "identity" problem: providing a short, stable and machine-readable code for every street in Nigeria and assigning exclusive codes to prominent landmarks.

Maimaps, launched on July 28, 2026, aims to solve the "accessibility" issue: it is a consumer application and developer API in which users can enter, paste, search and navigate Loccode without having to convert it to another address format.

Routing intelligence is the third layer. One identity, one map, one API: find, share, arrive, and now optimize.

What does the newly launched high-precision routing API bring?

The product is not a new consumer brand, but an extension of the existing Maimaps developer API. Starting points, ending points, and passing points can all be expressed as Loccode parsed into verified coordinates rather than interpreted street text. The same API can geocode and verify addresses before calculating routes. Since then, Maiaddy said the engine can be optimized based on real-time traffic, road closures and delivery needs; generate arrival times based on current conditions rather than historical averages; and guide riders to exact pickup and delivery coordinates rather than fuzzy street corners.

This last point is crucial in markets where "streets" are often inaccurate. In Maiaddy's model, Loccodes are assigned by street. The routing layer then attempts to learn the details of the last few meters. "Although Loccodes are assigned by street, the API's model can learn information such as 'If orders are frequently placed from a specific location in a Loccode, the exact pickup and delivery point is likely to be within 5 meters of that location'," Onyejeli explained.

For consumers, smarter navigation will automatically appear in the latest Maimaps app. For developers, the selling point is integration. Loccodes that identify destinations in consumer apps can be placed directly into route requests. Documentation and SDK are available on the Maiaddy Developers platform.

This business proposition goes beyond simple map updates. E-commerce and distribution platforms are verified before dispatch; online ride-hailing services improve the consistency between where passengers believe the vehicle is parked and where it actually stops; multi-stop logistics operators receive fleet level optimization, theoretically constantly recalculating routes as conditions change.

Scale challenges and local advantages

The obvious objection lies in scale. The global routing engine relies on open data sets and dense probe vehicle telemetry data. Secondary cities like Aba and the informal fringe of Lagos do not behave as regularly as these training grounds. Roads can appear, corrode, be blocked by markets, or disappear due to informal roadblocks.

Onyejeli does not pretend that Maiaddy already has Google's fleet density. "Maimaps already includes the same technology you find in global technology giants. What we currently lack and are working on is mass adoption. That's what makes fleet telemetry work best." "So we're currently catching up with real-time traffic data, but may be on par with it with road maps because Nigeria is our only focus and there are individuals contributing," he said. Maiaddy: An API priced in naira

The engineering team that has been packaging Google Maps and Mapbox for years will ask a more practical question than terrain algorithms: How painful is it to rewrite and how much does it cost?

Onyejeli's answer deliberately emphasized localization. "I like to describe our API integration as an engineer user experience reaching Apple level. All relevant documents are provided and in great detail. As a Nigeria company, our pricing is in naira. In Nigeria we will not be beaten on price because this is our home court."

The developer interface currently includes the Loccode API for address resolution and the Maimaps API for vector maps, place search, reverse geocoding and now routing functions, with a TypeScript SDK and a key management console. The strategic philosophy is that operators do not need to find one provider for identity, but another for mobility.

Routing intelligence that fails when a rider leaves the primary data corridor is not true intelligence. Onyejeli views low bandwidth as a design constraint rather than a footnote. "Low-bandwidth corridors are a major feature of the reality in Nigeria, and any serious company building a business for our market will take this into account during the engineering process." He said,"The 'offline maps' feature of the Maimaps mobile app will be available in the fourth quarter. This feature makes it possible to parse Loccode locally."

The Shadow of NIPOST

There is no Maiaddy story that does not mention postal services. In 2024, the company provided Loccodes to NIPOST for free, but received no response. It was this silence that led to the existence of Maimaps. Previously, Technnext reported that Onyejeli had sent an email to the General Post Office Director, publicly marking the agency and using intermediaries. None of this has resulted in a cooperative relationship. Therefore, Maiaddy built its own distribution layer.

The federal government is currently launching its own GIS-enabled alphanumeric zip code, with a national release scheduled for around October 2026, containing an 11-digit building-level code, and gradually starting discussions on linking location to national identity. NIPOST also discussed the possibility of routing on top of the system.

Onyejeli does not pretend that these two efforts occupy different planets. But he didn't agree. "Routing is very complex and resource-intensive, so I would be very surprised if NIPOST took on this task." He added,"In addition, I am generally pessimistic about their new zip code system for the following reasons: (1) I think the 11-digit zip code is too lengthy;(2) Having your home available directly through the zip code, especially in a country where 'Kidnapt-as-Service' has become a business model, seems problematic to me, despite the benefits of publicity;(3) And to make matters worse, the plan to link it to a NIN (national identification number) may be the biggest recipe for disaster in the entire enterprise."

He then took a step back from the framework of pure competition. "We don't compete with them in the traditional sense because in addition to various national address systems, there are What3 words and Codes. Ultimately, people and businesses will implement the most effective approach based on their specific use cases, and we are willing to work together."

Future Outlook

Maiaddy now spans three levels: Loccodes for place identity, Maimaps for consumer navigation, and corporate partner routing APIs for mobile. The question hanging over this technology stack is whether the company wants to remain a hidden infrastructure in other logistics applications or whether it wants to launch an African-wide consumer map battle.

Onyejeli rejected this binary opposition. "The possibilities in the B2B and consumer space are far beyond current imagination, and we intend to fully explore the depth of the possibilities."

Opportunity is a theme that Onyejeli mentions repeatedly. Nigeria does not lack map tiles, what it lacks is trustworthy locations and trustworthy paths between them. "Nigeria is one of the most dynamic economies in the world, but the friction caused by the inability to reliably identify and reach a place has long slowed down all progress," he once said."We built Maimaps for every Nigeria who has ever had to describe his location via voicemail."
