MTN Nigeria users exceeded 100 million mark, becoming the first telecom operator in the country to reach this milestone.
According to the latest industry data in July 2026, the leading telecommunications company MTN Nigeria has 100 million subscriber users, becoming the first Nigeria telecom operator to reach this milestone. Data breakdown shows that MTN Nigeria was the largest growth player in the month, with more than 1.2 million new users. At present, its total user base has reached 100.9 million.
Airtel consolidated its second position with the performance of adding more than 600,000 new users, reaching 66.76 million total users. Globacom ranks third with 23.63 million users. However, the company lost 54,000 users, and the number of users fell.
T2mobile (formerly 9mobile) ranked fourth with 3.61 million users. July was the first time in the past four months that the operator's number of subscribers increased. From April to June 2026, the operator's number of users has remained stagnant at 3.54 million.
Overall, the total number of telecom users in Nigeria has now reached 195.1 million, an increase from 192.23 million in June 2026. In addition, MTN Nigeria, which has 100 million users, accounts for approximately 52.1% of the country's total telecommunications users. This means that at least two out of every four mobile phone users in Nigeria are MTN users.
MTN leads the growth of mobile Internet users
In July 2026, the total number of mobile Internet subscribers increased to 157.3 million from 156.4 million in June. As expected, MTN Nigeria leads with 84.1 million users and a market share of 53.5%. Airtel followed closely with 56.8 million users, while Globacom fell far behind with just 15.6 million users.
T2mobile's user count also increased for the first time in four months. After continuous reform and adjustment, its user number now reaches 810,000.
Data traffic hits record highs, broadband penetration continues to increase
In July 2026, data consumption by Nigeria hit a new record, reaching 1.66 million terabytes. This number has increased for four consecutive months, showing that Nigeria people are increasingly dependent on the Internet.
Broadband subscriptions also increased to 124.4 million, with a penetration rate of 57.4%.
As modern applications, websites and media files become increasingly large, and devices remain connected online 24/7, personal Internet data usage continues to increase significantly. At the same time, watching high-definition (HD) or 4K video consumes a lot of data in a very short amount of time. In addition, most apps don't stop working after they are closed; they continue to sync data, get new messages, and check for updates in the background. Platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and Facebook automatically play videos as users scroll through their streams, consuming data before users choose to watch them.
