Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong: Building financial accounts specifically designed for artificial intelligence

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong said on September 9 that the company is building a dedicated financial account for artificial intelligence. At the same time, company documents show that the "AI agent" feature already supports segregated investment portfolios and is able to perform supported trading operations.

Project Background and Official Statement

Armstrong disclosed the project in response to Ruby on Rails founder David Heinemeier Hansson (DHH). Hansen once asked which company would be the first to create a "agent bank" that would allow machines to receive allowances and be allowed to manage daily expenses.

Armstrong responded briefly: "Coinbase is building financial accounts for AI." The statement did not provide a specific release date, product name, fee structure or regulatory details, and should therefore be seen as a description of Coinbase's strategic direction rather than a final confirmation of the new banking product.

Detailed explanation of existing features of Coinbase for Agents

According to Coinbase's current documentation, the "Coinbase for Agents" service has been launched as a transaction connection interface between supported AI applications and Coinbase Advanced Trade. The service runs through a remote Model Context Protocol (MCP) server or a local command-line interface.

Currently, the service supports the following functions:

  • Isolated portfolio: Users can limit the risk exposure of AI agents by setting up a separate portfolio. Users are advised to inject only assets that can withstand losses into the portfolio and strictly limit the agent's operating rights on the portfolio. This architecture is designed to reduce potential losses if agents misunderstand instructions or place unexpected orders.
  • Trading support: currently supports more than 900 cryptocurrency spot trading pairs. In addition, it also covers eligible U.S. futures, S & P 500 stocks, portfolio monitoring and conversion between USDC and the U.S. dollar.
  • Compliance Restrictions: Stock access and derivative trading remain subject to customer qualifications and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Security of funds flow: Transfers made through proxy API privileges can only be made between authorized Coinbase portfolios. Coinbase made it clear that these permissions do not allow assets to be extracted to external blockchain addresses. Users can also revoke access to applications at any time through Coinbase's security settings.

x402 payment protocol: The next step towards automated services

In addition to existing transaction capabilities, Coinbase is also developing the x402 payment protocol separately. The protocol allows humans or machines to pay directly for online resources in HTTP requests. According to the overview, AI agents can purchase tool calls, data, or other digital services without having to complete the traditional checkout process or subscription process.

Coinbase said its developer platform has processed more than 100 million x402 payments on the Base and Solana networks. It should be noted that this data reported by the company only counts payment activities and does not clearly distinguish between the number of independent users or the number of autonomous agents initiating transactions.

Currently, direct x402 payments through "Coinbase for Agents" are still listed as "coming soon." Features in the plan include payment for research services, data APIs and computing resources consumed by agents. However, Coinbase has not announced a specific activation date.

Safety warnings and user responsibilities

Independent researchers have pointed out relevant safety concerns. A July 2026 research report pointed out that 15 x402 service providers had rule violations, describing potential asset theft, unpaid service fee use, and Gas fee abuse. Affected service providers, including Coinbase, have acknowledged the findings and taken mitigation measures.

Coinbase explicitly warns that AI agents may make mistakes, misinterpret instructions, or produce inaccurate results. Users still need to review and accept authorization responsibilities for transactions, transfers, and account changes made through the proxy workflow. The document recommends that users clearly specify the asset type, amount, order type, and selected investment portfolio. Coinbase's tests found that some models may choose the wrong trading pair or stop executing orders after previewing orders instead of actually closing. These limitations challenge Armstrong's vision of machines independently managing financial tasks.

Future Outlook

As of now, Coinbase has not announced whether the planned financial accounts include functions such as bank cards, bank transfers, regular bill payments or direct merchant payments. At the same time, it did not explain how identity verification, dispute resolution, refund and legal liability are defined when software initiates transactions.

The next identified milestone will be the activation of x402 payments within "Coinbase for Agents" or the release of an official product announcement describing broader consumer features. Previously, Coinbase offered an AI-connected trading account with controlled portfolio access, rather than a fully autonomous bank account.
