Trademark dispute escalates: Uniscoin takes Uniswap Labs to Federal Court
Unicoin has filed a lawsuit against Uniswap Labs in the Federal Court for the Southern District of New York, further escalating the long-standing dispute over the use of the "UNICOIN" name and related brands. TransparentBusiness Inc. (The operating entity is Unicoin) sued Universal Navigation Inc. (The operating entity is Uniswap Labs).
The indictment requests the court to determine that its "UNICOIN" trademark did not infringe or dilute Uniswap's claimed "$UNI","UNISWAP" and "UNICHAIN" trademark rights, and seeks to cancel Uniswap's "UNI" trademark registered in the United States. In addition to requiring confirmation of non-infringement, Unicoin also pointed out that the "UNI" prefix is widely used, listed more than 3,600 U.S. Trademark Registering cases that contain "UNI", and argued that "uni" is a common or descriptive term and cannot identify Uniswap as the sole source.
According to the contents of the indictment, Uniswap's legal team sent three reminders to Unicoin on June 3, July 17 and August 14 respectively, accusing it of trademark infringement, trademark dilution, cybersquatting and unfair competition, and threatened to take further legal action. The letters require Unicoin to stop using "UNICOIN" and other brand logos with "UNI" elements, transfer the unicoin.com and unicoin.org domain names, provide account details of revenue and profits, and reimburse Uniswap's legal fees.
In response, Unicoin refuted that it had independently used the name "UNICOIN" since 2021 before Uniswap filed infringement allegations. In addition, the indictment also requests the court to declare that the use of the unicoin.com and unicoin.org domain names does not violate the U.S. Anti-Cybersquatting Consumer Protection Act.
Dispute intensifies on the eve of the $UNCN token issuance
The lawsuit occurred weeks before the September 28 public listing date of the $UNCN token listed on Unicoin's official website. The timing is putting pressure on both sides as Unicoin tries to move forward with its public offering plan while dealing with a dual legal battle.
The trademark dispute is not the only regulatory challenge facing Unicoin. In May 2025, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) sued the company and multiple executives, accusing them of raising more than $100 million through suspected misleading and unregistered securities offerings. Alex Konanykhin, CEO of Unicoin, denied the allegations and said the company would resolutely respond to the lawsuit.
At the same time, Uniswap remains the leading force in the decentralized transaction space. As of the time of writing, DeFiLlama data shows that the Uniswap protocol ranks first among all decentralized exchanges with a 24-hour transaction volume of more than US$3.9 billion.
As the industry matures and naming disputes become more common, the outcome of this case may have a broader impact on how encryption projects maintain brand identity.
