Tether and Fasanara Capital jointly launched a US$400 million fund to bring USDT Capital into the private credit field.
Tether, as the world's largest issuer of stablecoin, has cooperated with asset management company Fasanara Capital to jointly launch a US$400 million private credit fund. The fund aims to gradually expand to US$3 billion by attracting external institutional investors to participate.
Fund operation mechanism and market significance
Despite its ambitious goals, the fund's operating logic is relatively clear: USDT-denominated capital will be used to issue loans to borrowers in more than 60 countries around the world. In many of these markets, traditional banking channels have difficulty providing sufficient or affordable U.S. dollar credit. As a result, this move provides local borrowers with a new source of U.S. dollar liquidity; for Tether, it marks an important step in its business moving from passive holding of reserve assets to proactive initiating credit business.
Risk isolation and investor perception challenges
This shift is important for the public to understand Tether's business model. Tether has long focused on explaining the reserve support behind its USDT, which mainly includes short-term U.S. Treasuries and cash equivalents. Private credit funds, on the other hand, belong to a completely different asset class that involves actual default risk, and Tether chooses to assume such return characteristics directly rather than being indirectly exposed to risk solely through its reserve portfolio.
The core question currently raised is: Can such credit risk remain clearly isolated from the reserve assets that support every USDT in circulation? Or is it possible that no matter how the legal structure is designed, the two businesses may end up intertwined in the minds of investors? There is no clear answer to this question, but it has become the focus of market attention.
