Canada opens a new compliance channel for XRP options for U.S. investors
The Canadian Derivatives Clearing Corporation (CDCC) has officially registered options on two domestic XRP exchange-traded funds (ETFs) to be sold in the United States, marking that Canada has once again opened up another regulated channel for U.S. investors seeking XRP exposure. This move was confirmed through Form 8-K submitted on September 9, 2026.
Declaration content and coverage
As the central counterparty for derivatives traded on Canadian exchanges, CDCC stated that options issued based on the Evolve XRP ETF and Purpose XRP ETF have been registered for sale in the United States through Form S-20, a registration statement allowing contracts to enter the U.S. open market.
The key is that XRP options are not suddenly listed on U.S. exchanges. They remain contracts listed in Canada and are cleared by the CDCC. The filing highlights the fact that Canada's XRP products are becoming easily accessible through a regulated cross-border derivatives framework. The two underlying funds have been trading on the Montreal Stock Exchange since early 2026 and have multiple quarters of solid operations before any cross-border promotion.
For U.S. institutions, the practical effect is to provide direct exposure to XRP price fluctuations through a familiar structure, without the need for token custody or wallet management, and simply executing standardized order types on regulated Canadian exchanges.
Broader regulatory background and institutional interests
With this registration, contracts linked to XRP are now in the same regulated derivatives category as comparable products from Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) classified XRP as a qualifying digital commodity, and a notice published in the Federal Register laid the legal basis.
This development is consistent with the growth of institutional participation in the XRP ecosystem. Major Canadian banks also disclosed limited exposure to XRP-related investment products. National Bank of Canada reported investing approximately $330,000 in the Bitwise XRP ETF through regulatory filings, while Bank of Montreal disclosed investing in XRP products as part of a broader portfolio diversification.
The current development results are the result of the strategy launched in the summer of 2025. At the time, Canada became the first country in North America to launch fully physically backed spot XRP ETFs on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX), which are pegged to the CME CF XRP-U.S. dollar reference exchange rate. In the first quarter of 2026, the nominal trading volume of CME XRP futures and options reached US$13 billion, and the cumulative XRP futures trading volume subsequently exceeded US$62 billion.
