Zcash votes for 25-second blockbuster, NSM re-release postponed until 2031

Zcash and Blockchain Governance News

Zcash (ZEC) token holders have clarified the direction for the next major upgrade to the network based on the results of a currency holder sentiment survey released Monday on the NU7 upgrade. Voting rights are determined by the number of ZECs that can be spent in the Ironwood Shielded Pool at the snapshot time.

Shorten block time from 75 seconds to 25 seconds

The proposal to reduce network target block time from 75 seconds to 25 seconds received 99.9% of the ZEC weighted vote support, which includes abstentions. Shorter block times will reduce the expected wait time for a transaction to be first confirmed. In order to keep the total daily ZEC circulation unchanged, the number of ZECs released per block will be reduced proportionately. The issue of retaining Zcash's existing halving plan also received 98.9%. "Halving" refers to the event of halving the issuance of new coins at fixed intervals.

Currency holders also voted to exclude any features that were not ready before September 30. Developers plan to deliver the final NU7 project before that deadline. An activation date for the test network or the main network has not yet been determined. The holder vote was conducted independently of the advisory group's investigation. Among the Zcash community advisory group, differences were more evident: 57 members supported replacing the halving mechanism with a progressive release curve, while 54 members preferred to keep the existing plan. The winning holder position will also allow ZEC, which has previously been withdrawn from circulation, to re-enter the market through future block rewards.

97% of currency holders support postponing NSM to February 2031

The Network Sustainability Mechanism (NSM) is another key issue on the NU7 agenda. The mechanism was introduced in January 2026 and aims to address concerns about Zcash's long-term security budget. The main concern is that as block rewards decline, they may end up falling below the level needed to incentivize miners to verify transactions. NSM will address this issue by recycling 60% of ZEC transaction fees for future block rewards. Total supply will remain at the top of 21 million ZEC.

About 97% of token holders voted in favor of postponing the re-issuance of NSM until February 2031. About 2.3 million ZECs support the delay plan. About 70,239 ZECs voted to activate the mechanism as soon as possible. The gap between the two parties reflects a general preference in the community to maintain the existing distribution structure for now.

In the 24 hours after the results were announced, ZEC prices rose 3.8%, continuing a 132% increase in the previous month, according to CoinMarketCap data. There is currently no fixed activation date for the NU7 upgrade on the test network or the main network.
