Ledger Wallet Desktop natively supports Zcash private transactions
Ledger has added native privacy support for @Zcash to its Ledger Wallet Desktop application. This update allows users to manage private $ZEC balances directly through Ledger's official software, and each transaction needs to be confirmed on hardware devices, ensuring asset security.
Ironwood Privacy Pool: Detailed explanation of privacy balance coverage
The privacy balances currently displayed only cover $ZEC stored in the Ironwood pool. This is part of the NU6.3 network upgrade and will be officially launched on July 28, 2026. Ironwood replaced the older version of Orchard's pool, after researchers discovered that Orchard's zero-knowledge proof circuit was flawed and could theoretically be used to make counterfeit $ZECs without leaving traces on the chain. The new Ironwood pool uses a proof circuit for formal verification and a recording mechanism with quantum resistance, providing stronger security than previous generations.
Zcash uses zero-knowledge proof technology to encrypt transaction details, concealing the sender, recipient and amount while still allowing the network to confirm the validity of the transaction. In previous versions, Ledger's support for Zcash was limited to transparent transactions. Although some de-privacy features were subsequently added, there are still obvious functional gaps for privacy-conscious users who store $ZEC in cold wallets.
Please note for Zondax application users: November 5 is the migration deadline
This integration comes with an important time node. Ledger will stop providing downloads of older versions of Zcash privacy apps developed by Zondax on November 5, 2026. Users currently using the app need to complete the fund migration before this date to avoid service interruptions.
This time point is particularly critical given the rapid flow of funds since Ironwood was activated. The new pool has attracted millions of $ZECs migrated from the old Orchard pool. Currently, the Orchord pool is restricted and only allows withdrawals under the turnstile mechanism, which limits outflows to verifiable deposits.
Native integration of privacy support into Ledger's own applications eliminates reliance on third-party tools and retains the signing process within Ledger devices. This is in line with the security model that hardware wallet users initially expected.
