Ethereum developers arrange "Amsterdam" upgrade

The Ethereum development team has determined the activation time for the next major upgrade to the network-codenamed "Amsterdam." The upgrade will be available on the Sepolia Test Network on October 6.

The Ethereum Foundation said on Monday that before the upgrade is activated, Sepolia node operators must simultaneously update their execution layer and consensus layer clients.

Core Improvement: Establishing Proposer-Builder Separation Mechanism

An important change to the "Amsterdam" upgrade is the formal inclusion of the "Proposer-Builder Separation (PBS) mechanism in the agreement. This change aims to integrate the handover process between dedicated block builders and verifiers into the Ethereum underlying protocol, thereby reducing reliance on third-party middleware.

Other key updates

This upgrade will also introduce Block-level Access Lists to record the accounts used and storage locations in each block. In addition, the Gas pricing mechanism will also be adjusted to more accurately reflect the actual cost of creating and accessing data on Ethereum.

The foundation warns that smart contracts that rely on fixed Gas subsidies or hard-coded Gas limits may need to be adjusted accordingly.

Follow-up roadmap

Currently, developers have not announced the specific deployment date of the upgrade on the Hoodi testnet, which focuses on verifiers, and the main network.
