SBI Holdings completes its wholly-owned acquisition of Bitbank and deepens its digital asset layout in Japan

SBI Holdings announced on October 1, 2026 that it has completed the acquisition of Bitbank treasury shares from MIXI and Ceres. This move marks that Bitbank has officially become a wholly-owned subsidiary of SBI Group.

With the ownership change, Bitbank disclosed a new management structure that brings it closer to SBI VC Trade, another digital asset exchange owned by SBI. Tomohiko Kondo, representative director and president of SBI VC Trade, has joined Bitbank's board of directors; meanwhile, Bitbank CEO Noriyuki Hirosue has served as an external director of SBI VC Trade. This cross-appointment arrangement allows the two exchanges to achieve overlap and collaboration in leadership while maintaining their status as independent operating platforms.

SBI confirmed in an official statement that the equity acquisition was successfully completed and did not cause any interference to the services of Bitbank's existing customers. Users can continue to use the exchange's services as normal as before. The completion of this transaction fully integrates an established Japanese cryptocurrency exchange into the SBI Group, further consolidating SBI's deep foundation in Japan's digital asset services, banking and securities businesses.

SBI stated that in the future, it will rely on SBI Group's broader financial capabilities, existing customer base and management resources to promote Bitbank's development in digital asset-related businesses. This strategy is consistent with SBI's efforts over the past few years to integrate other financial services acquisitions into its banking, brokerage and crypto ecosystem.

The deal strengthens SBI's position in the Japanese crypto exchange market at a time when Japanese regulators are steadily establishing a clearer licensing and supervision framework for digital asset businesses. Fully internalizing Bitbank allows SBI to more closely control the direction of the exchange's product evolution and compliance stance. At the same time, the overlap in leadership with SBI VC Trade also suggests that the group plans to coordinate strategies among the crypto exchanges it holds rather than operate them as completely independent entities.

Japan has established one of the most detailed regulatory systems for cryptocurrency exchanges in the world, requiring operators to register with the Financial Services Agency and meet strict custody and disclosure standards. The absorption of mature exchanges like Bitbank by large diversified financial groups like SBI is in line with the broader consolidation trend in the market. Under this trend, economies of scale and compliance infrastructure are increasingly becoming key factors in determining whether platforms can continue to grow or be merged with larger competitors.
