66-day countdown: Why a vacation can cost you your assets in Abstract

On October 9, 2026, when we opened Abstract's migration page, a number was displayed on the screen: "66 days remaining for chain closure." There is also a warning below: Any user who does not withdraw funds from the chain before December 15 will permanently lose access to the funds. Please calmly imagine this scene.

Some people encountered an accident and stayed in the hospital for eight weeks; some people chose to take a long vacation, were on childcare leave, or were in a deep work crisis and did not open any cryptocurrency applications for two or three months. In traditional banks or regulated exchanges, funds remain safe even after this time. But on Abstract, the money may have disappeared.

This is not the personal bad luck of a few users, but an inherent attribute of the system. This also forces us to ask again a question that the crypto market is often regarded as "solved": If a company can decide the end of a blockchain simply by posting a post on X (formerly Twitter), where does so-called "decentralization" embody?

Abstract is a proprietary product of Igloo Inc. (the company behind Puggy Penguins). On October 6, the project was announced to be closed. According to it, the reason was that growth on the chain was stagnant and it could not maintain operations as a pure network for daily applications. Luca Netz, chief operating officer of Igloo, said the company lost seven-figure dollars in funding over two years. This situation is understandable, and the company has the right to bankruptcy.

But what people don't need to accept is the way the risk of failure is allocated. The deadline is 70 days from the date of the announcement. Any user who misses this period will clearly lose all claims under the new Migration Center Terms of Service; while users who encounter misfortune during the withdrawal process will only receive a maximum of US$100 under the same contract. The contract stipulates the obligation to notify users separately only when required by law, and the main information is still released through X and Discord. If you don't pay attention to these channels, users may find out too late.

Layer 2 lacking an emergency exit mechanism: L2BEAT's evaluation of Abstract

Layer 2's commitment lies in its security inherited from Ethereum. Ideally, this means that even if the operator disappears, each user can still withdraw funds through the main network. However, independent review website L2BEAT rates Abstract at Stage 0 (the minimum maturity level). Based on its evaluation, users can put transactions into the Ethereum queue, but cannot force them to be included. Only authorizers can report chain status to Ethereum, and in an emergency, the committee can change contracts without a waiting period. Once the operator fails, withdrawals will be frozen.

In other words: "Ethereum Layer 2" sounds like Ethereum, but control is in the hands of a few participants. The speed at which users are aware of this can be seen from a data from L2BEAT: As of October 9, the lock value on Abstract was approximately US$30 million, down 44.5% from a week ago.

Central Regulation versus Decentralization and Disorder: MiCA's Requirements for Platform Clearing

Abstract、Pudgy Party、9dcc：快速清算的模式

Abstract is not an isolated case, and the pattern behind it is what we are most worried about about this matter. There are three examples in the past eighteen months:

• Pudgy Party: These mobile games from the Pudgy Penguins series were launched in August 2025 and ceased operating in June 2026 less than a year later without any liquidation stage. According to industry media reports such as Decrypt, there were initially no refunds or relocation of purchased items. This in particular violates the core promise of Web3 games, that players own their items.
• 9dcc: The cryptocurrency fashion brand launched by well-known NFT collector gmoney will be announced to end on May 27, 2025, and will take effect at the end of the month. Reasons include "heavy mood", market headwinds and "maybe it is too early." Holders have 90 days to redeem stored goods. "Admit One" members 'NFT rights also ended at the end of the month. As 9dcc stated, they were terminated as originally planned on its third anniversary.
• Blast: This Layer 2 network attracted billions of dollars through points and airdrop hopes in 2024 and announced its end on October 2, 2026. We have previously written separately about the Blast deadline.

The script is similar every time: a letter of apology, a quote to the market environment, a short deadline, and all subsequent responsibilities are borne by the user.

Our personal experience with the Abstract team: We should have issued the warning earlier
