Zcash (ZEC) strongly ranks among the top ten cryptocurrencies, with a leveraged clearing scale of US$36.6 million.
After experiencing a strong rebound, the price of Zcash (ZEC) briefly exceeded the US$1000 mark, thus climbing strongly into the top ten cryptocurrency market value. The rally not only increased trading activity for this highly volatile asset, but also increased market risk.
The rebound pushed Zcash to break through the thousand-dollar mark.
Data showed that Zcash rose by about 20% in 24 hours and hit a high of $1023 on Friday. According to CoinMarketCap data, the surge brought its market value close to US$17 billion at one point, and then stabilized at around US$983, with a market value of approximately US$16.6 billion.
This strong rise consolidates Zcash's position as the world's 10th largest cryptocurrency, which is also its highest ranking in many years. The influx of new demand has caused trading volumes to soar.
Leveraged trading exacerbates market volatility
The number of open interests in ZEC futures rose sharply to approximately 2.3 million ZECs, worth nearly US$2.3 billion at current prices. This figure accounts for approximately 14% of Zcash's total market value. Such a large position size indicates that position allocation in the derivatives market is extremely aggressive. Analysts pointed out that this extraordinary market participation highlighted the rising speculative sentiment.
The surge in leveraged activity has caused short traders to suffer heavy losses. Within 24 hours, approximately $36.6 million of ZEC leveraged positions were forcibly closed, of which $34.5 million was for traders shorting the asset's price. Short positions accounted for approximately 94% of reported closings.
A wave of short liquidations can often further fuel the current rally, as closers must buy ZEC to cover their positions, creating additional buying pressure. Although leveraged trading has generated huge benefits for long participants, analysts warn that given the size of current futures positions, the same leverage effect could amplify downside risks once market sentiment reverses.
ETF conversion stimulates institutional demand
This rally follows a key change facing U.S. investors: Leading digital asset management company Grayscale completed the conversion of its long-running Zcash trust fund to The Zcash ETF. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approved the ETF structure and new name in late August. Currently, the ETF's ticker symbol is "ZCSH", providing investors with access to ZEC through the regulated brokerage market.
In the past few weeks, market momentum has been accumulating. ZEC prices have started to move higher after Grayscale submitted a revised ETF application, which included plans to list on the NYSE Arca and a 2.5% management fee. These developments have brought Zcash prices back to levels seen during the 2018 bull market cycle, highlighting the institutionalization process as the main catalyst for this round of gains.
Grayscale is recognized as one of the world's largest managers of digital currency investment products, often providing traditional financial channels with access to the cryptocurrency market.
Noun explanation: An ETF (exchange-traded fund) is a regulated investment product that tracks asset prices and trades like stocks, thereby providing broader investor access and liquidity for underlying cryptocurrencies such as ZEC.
Analysts emphasize leverage risk
Zcash has dramatically entered the forefront of the cryptocurrency market, not just limited to short-term speculation. As open interest in ZEC futures now accounts for nearly one-seventh of the currency's total market value, analysts stressed that the current leverage forces driving the sharp rise will also quickly increase downward pressure if market sentiment changes.
Institutional products such as ETFs are intertwined with high futures activity, putting ZEC at the center of a critical test. For novice and experienced investors, the asset's liquidity and price movements are still closely linked to the overall trend of the cryptocurrency market.
