Coinbase develops innovative financial solutions for artificial intelligence systems
Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase, one of the leading U.S. cryptocurrency platforms, announced that he is developing a breakthrough payment infrastructure specifically tailored for artificial intelligence (AI) systems. Called "Coinbase for Agents", the service aims to provide financial accounts similar to bank accounts for AI models, equipped with independent investment portfolios and controlled financial management functions. Coinbase hopes to use this innovative infrastructure to enhance the access experience for corporate and individual users.
What is the independent account model of AI?
Yes, this separate account model allows AI to operate using a separate financial account. The concept was further explained after David Heinemeier Hansson, founder of the Ruby on Rails framework, expressed his interest in machines being able to independently manage certain transactions with preset spending limits. Armstrong revealed that Coinbase has begun to create such an AI infrastructure that will allow it to perform payment operations autonomously within a set range.
Under this framework, AI models like Claude or ChatGPT can connect directly to Coinbase through a local MCP server. But this does not mean that they can have unlimited control over users 'bank card funds. Instead, the system will create a satellite account for the AI, which will operate in accordance with the established authorization scope while being separated from the main account.
The driving force behind Coinbase's market expansion
Coinbase launched the new product after an extensive internal efficiency improvement initiative. Earlier this year, the company laid off about 14%(or 700 positions) and formed a small, AI-focused team led by experts. Innovations previously tested internally are now being expanded to a wider market, including giving AI access to products such as derivatives and S & P 500 stocks, demonstrating the deep integration of digital financial planning and management capabilities with AI technology.
The final technical obstacle in this process is the payment mechanism itself. Traditional subscription models are not suitable for software that runs independently. To this end, the x402 protocol came into being, which supports pay-on-request to better meet the needs of autonomous software. Brian Armstrong explained that the infrastructure allows software to make payments in a controlled manner, enhancing the financial interaction capabilities of AI systems.
The x402 model enables AI to use USDC balances to process instant microtransactions without the need for API keys. Although x402 still runs indirectly through Agentic Wallet, the goal is to integrate its structure directly into the "Coinbase for Agents" system to address existing gaps. The plan aims to establish an economic track where robots can process more transactions than humans.
The addition of new board member Anthony Armstrong is seen as an important step to strengthen this company-level strategy. Through these systems, Coinbase is laying the foundation for an economic and financial environment in which machines and AI will play a central role in financial transactions, breaking the boundaries of what traditional banks can provide. This development reflects the industry-wide trend towards integrating AI and fintech in innovative and efficient ways.
