Will XRP someday replace Bitcoin? Former Ripple CTO David Schwartz explores possibilities
In discussions at X Spaces, David Schwartz, former chief technology officer (CTO) of Ripple, discussed the possibility that XRP might surpass Bitcoin in the future. This view further inspired the community's boldest investment expectations in the medium and long term. Schwartz pointed out that if XRP Ledger (XRPL) continues to gain market attention and adoption, XRP prices may rise faster. However, he also emphasized that there was a key constraint, which would be a core variable in determining whether multiple scenarios could be achieved.
Schwartz believes that XRP has the potential to replace Bitcoin.
During the discussion, when asked if he believed XRP could eventually surpass Bitcoin, Schwartz admitted this possibility, but clarified that this situation did not necessarily result from the decline in Bitcoin's value.
"I think this will not happen because Bitcoin is shrinking, but because XRP is growing faster than Bitcoin." Schwartz explained.
He predicts that the digital asset market will expand significantly in the next few years, creating a situation where major cryptocurrencies appreciate together rather than simply competing for market share. According to Schwartz, thanks to its speed and wider functionality, XRP Ledger is expected to become one of the main beneficiaries of future growth in the crypto industry, which is its key advantage over Bitcoin.
"XRP Ledger will reap more growth dividends due to its higher functionality and/or faster speed." He said. Schwartz added that users may be attracted to features that are "not supported by Bitcoin."
He even expressed stronger confidence that there was a high possibility of a sharp rise in XRP. "To be honest, I think the probability of XRP rising is greater than the probability of not rising." Schwartz commented.
XRP has surpassed Ethereum. Will Bitcoin be the next target?
XRP, which has close ties to Ripple, has proven its ability to challenge giants in the crypto space. During the sharp rebound from late 2017 to early 2018, XRP once leapt to second place due to its soaring market value, becoming Bitcoin's strongest opponent.
During that period, XRP also set the most eye-catching market value breakthrough record in its history. In late December 2017, XRP's market value climbed to approximately US$87 billion, exceeding Ethereum's valuation of approximately US$72 billion at the time, and briefly became the world's second largest cryptocurrency. As of the end of that year, XRP remained ahead of Ethereum.
However, the gap between XRP and Bitcoin is still huge today. Currently, XRP is trading at approximately US$1.36 and has a market value of approximately US$85.65 billion. In comparison, Bitcoin is trading at close to US$77,374 and has a market value of approximately US$1.55 trillion. At this level, Bitcoin's market value is approximately 18.1 times that of XRP. Although XRP still faces huge gaps, its historical performance shows that the token has made extraordinary leaps in the ranking of crypto market capitalisation.
