Circle and Tether freeze stablecoins linked to Bitget hacking-but most of the funds have been lost

It is this loophole that leads to very few recoveries. The attackers appeared to be racing against time to convert freezable assets into ETH before issuers intervened, integrating stolen tokens into new wallets within minutes, while exchanging stablecoins out. The blockchain tracker pointed out that other addresses associated with hackers still hold more than 63,000 ETH assets, and these assets are not controlled by any issuer.

One of the largest exchange leaks of the year

This freeze has only had a slight impact on one of the largest exchange leaks of the year. The hacking attack on Bitget resulted in the loss of hundreds of millions of dollars, with early estimates of losses as high as $387 million. Analysts have listed North Korea's Lazarus Group as a potential perpetrator.

Bitget CEO Gracy Chen said the attacker hacked into the back-end system of the exchange's wallet infrastructure and triggered unauthorized transfers of funds by forging transaction data, while ruling out the possibility of private keys being leaked. The exchange announced that it would use more than $464 million in user protection funds to cover losses.

Centralized control caused controversy

This rapid blacklist action has attracted widespread attention, and its response speed is better than some past cases. However, it has also rekindled a long-standing debate about issuers having centralized control of so-called "permission-free" assets.
