Bitcoin's fourth quarter outlook: $87,500 resistance versus key support game

Bitcoin ushered in the start of the fourth quarter after experiencing a strong 43% gain in the third quarter. However, analysts pointed out that the possibility of Bitcoin maintaining the same rate of increase is not absolute, and the first significant resistance it faces is at $87,500. If this level can be effectively exceeded, the upward momentum is expected to accelerate; while the lower range of US$82,000 to US$82,500 is regarded as a key support area. The Federal Reserve's interest rate policy, liquidity in the treasury bond market, institutional demand and the flow of funds from Bitcoin ETFs will be core factors determining whether prices can break through these key levels.

What does a breakthrough of US$87,500 mean?

Bitget Wallet research analyst Lacie Zhang believes that if Bitcoin is to achieve a broader recovery, it must break the US$87,500 barrier. A strong breakthrough above the region may trigger the liquidation of short market positions, triggering a "Short Squeeze" market.

Zhang pointed out that the next target area worthy of attention is about US$95,000. If Bitcoin succeeds in stabilizing itself above $87,500, the path to this high will be opened. On the contrary, if this threshold cannot be effectively exceeded, the market pattern may reverse. Z emphasized that he regarded the US$82,000 to US$82,500 range as a key bottom support band.

How does the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision affect Bitcoin?

The Federal Reserve's monetary policy will be one of the key variables determining Bitcoin's performance in the fourth quarter. Although the latest U.S. employment data was lower than expected, Lacie Zhang predicts that the Federal Reserve will still raise interest rates by 25 basis points on October 28. If implemented as scheduled, the policy interest rate target range will rise to 4.00%-4.25%. The previous September rate hike was the first time the Federal Reserve raised interest rates in more than three years.

Nexo Dispatch analyst Iliya Kalchev also listed the Federal Reserve as the most important variable in the fourth quarter. However, more moderate core PCE data and weak employment reports have somewhat eased the pressure for further tightening in the near term. Kalchev added that geopolitical dynamics could also complicate the situation. Especially if rising energy prices exacerbate inflationary pressures, market expectations for the Fed's interest rate policy may change again.

Can Bitcoin continue to rise in Q4?

During the third quarter's rise, the government bond market and spot demand played an important role. Kalchev pointed out that after the U.S. Treasury Department announced in August an increase in the size of long-term treasury bond repurchases, Bitcoin rose 7% on August 18, and pushed the increase to more than 20% in the following days. During the same period, the flow of funds into spot Bitcoin ETFs also turned positive. Kalchev said futures funding rates remained relatively low, indicating that the rise was mainly driven by spot demand rather than over-leveraged speculation.

Alex Kozenko, chief marketing officer at WhiteBIT, pointed out that the current market structure is different from the past. As institutional engagement increases and capital inflows from compliant investment products increase, these factors play an increasingly important role in Bitcoin pricing. Therefore, during the fourth quarter, liquidity and institutional trends will become key monitoring targets.

Can Bitcoin repeat the 43% increase in Q3?

Bitcoin opened its third quarter at a price below $58,000, its lowest point in about a year and a half. Subsequently, BTC regained the $80,000 mark in mid-August and ended the quarter with a gain of about 43%. However, analysts are cautious about whether this brilliant record can be replicated in the fourth quarter.

According to historical data provided by Kalchev, nine quarters in the past 15 years ended in positive earnings in the fourth quarter. Despite this, the average yield is only about 9%. The higher average is mainly affected by abnormal bull years such as 2013 and 2017. Therefore, the fact that most of the fourth quarter in history has performed well does not mean that Bitcoin will surely repeat its strong trend in the third quarter this year.

What happens if it falls below $82,000?

For Bitcoin, the $87,500 resistance above is as important as the $82,000 -82,500 support below. Lacie Zhang warned that if this support area is lost, selling pressure may accelerate, causing Bitcoin to fall below $80,000. Therefore, the focus in the fourth quarter is not limited to breakthroughs in new highs, but also needs to be vigilant about downside risks. A breakthrough of US$87,500 will be the primary signal that the rebound force is increasing, while a break below the US$82,000 -82,500 support level may cause the market to face renewed downward pressure.

Bitcoin's direction in the fourth quarter may not necessarily be determined by a single event. Investors need to pay close attention to the Federal Reserve's interest rate decisions, treasury bond market liquidity, ETF capital flows and institutional demand, which will affect the market's direction together with key technical bits of prices.
