Ethereum fell nearly 6% in a single day, and leveraged bulls face liquidation pressure.

According to CryptoSlate citing CoinGlass data, on October 7, 2026, the price of Ethereum fell nearly 6% to approximately US$2,570, resulting in approximately US$1.35 billion of leveraged long positions facing forced liquidation risks.

Overview of market dynamics and data

As of press time, Ethereum has fallen 5.9% in the past 24 hours to approximately US$2,570. Real-time data from CoinGecko showed that the ETH price was US$2,569.02, a intraday decline of 4.69%. Its current market value is approximately US$313.7 billion, and its 24-hour trading volume is approximately US$19.1 billion. Although the declines shown by different data sources differ slightly (the report describes them as a decline of about 5.9%), the overall downward trend is clear.

This price fluctuation puts a large amount of leveraged long exposure into the clearing range. About $1.35 billion of ETH long positions are reported to be at liquidation levels below current spot prices. When the loss of a leveraged position reaches the exchange's margin threshold, automatic forced closing will be triggered, and liquidation will occur.

Historical comparison and chain reactions

This sell-off is similar to earlier stress events in the crypto market. Previously, when Bitcoin fell below US$84,000 and the US$360 million long position was liquidated, altcoins, including ETH, were quickly affected, triggering a widespread cross-market selling wave.

Huge amounts of clearing are concentrated in long positions, and the risks of Hyperliquid platform are highlighted

The report shows that a total of US$233.36 million in ETH positions were liquidated in the past 24 hours, of which approximately US$221.87 million (approximately 95%) came from long positions. This disparity confirms that bearish pressure is concentrated mainly on traders betting on price increases.

It is worth noting that there is a particularly concentrated clearing area on the decentralized derivatives trading platform Hyperliquid: approximately US$112.83 million of long ETH positions will be cleared as prices approach US$2,511. This level is about $58 lower than current spot prices, which means that a further small decline in prices could trigger a massive wave of forced selling on the platform alone. CoinMarketCap's clearing map also visually shows how closely these clearing levels are piled up below current prices.

Market sentiment and key observations

Despite the considerable pressure on the derivatives market, broader indicators of market sentiment have surprisingly strengthened. The "Fear and Greed Index" is currently at 71 points, which belongs to the "Greed" range. This suggests that while futures traders are absorbing huge losses, spot market participants have not yet shifted to a defensive stance.

Key points and signals:

  • Primary downside trigger point: Need to pay close attention to the US$2,511 cluster on Hyperliquid. A break below this level could accelerate forced selling and push ETH into the next dense area of open interest.
  • Resistance level review: Analysts have previously pointed to $2,800 as a key resistance level for Ethereum's bullish structure; with today's price movements, the gap to that target has widened significantly.
  • Funding rates and open interest: Traders should also pay close attention to changes in funding rates and the number of open interest in major derivatives venues. If it stabilizes above US$2,511 and open interest contracts fall, it means that the wave of liquidation has been basically absorbed; if it continues to fall below US$2,511 and trading volume increases, it means that further forced liquidations are still waiting ahead.
