Ethereum ETF recorded a net outflow of US$201.9 million, Bitcoin funds returned to positive inflows
Ethereum exchange-traded funds (ETFs) recorded a net outflow of US$201.9 million in a single day, while funds focused on Bitcoin reversed the trend and returned to positive inflows. This phenomenon marks a significant divergence in institutional demand between the two digital assets with the largest market capitalisation.
The Ethereum ETF encountered significant capital retractions
The $201.9 million withdrawal was a significant one-day reversal of flow for funds that had previously attracted a net inflow of $455 million. The Ethereum ETF, with ETH as the underlying asset, operates similarly to the spot Bitcoin ETF: daily traffic data reflects net purchases or redemptions by authorized participants, usually large financial institutions.
Although a single-day outflow does not establish a lasting trend, the $201.9 million withdrawal makes it one of the more eye-catching single-day redemption events since the spot Ethereum ETF began trading in the U.S. market. Such traffic data is closely watched as a proxy measure of institutional appetites (which is often translated as "appetite" or "demand" in the Chinese context) rather than individual investors 'sentiment.
Bitcoin funds are bucking the trend, highlighting differences in asset preferences
When the assets of the Ethereum ETF shrank, the Bitcoin fund moved in the opposite direction, recording a return to net reflux. The comparison is a signal based on the flow of funds rather than the final conclusion on the price trend of any one asset, but it does suggest that institutional allocators took different attitudes towards the two assets during the same trading day.
This divergence reproduces a pattern that has occurred repeatedly since the launch of the U.S. spot cryptocurrency ETF. Earlier this year, Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs faced outflows of a combined $2 billion, highlighting the potential for both products to experience mass redemptions simultaneously. However, when Bitcoin attracts new capital and Ethereum loses capital, this constitutes a different signal, pointing to relative preference rather than a broad risk-averse act of withdrawing from digital assets altogether.
Bitcoin's return to inflow is also in line with its positioning as the main institutional channel into the digital asset field. Compared to its Ethereum counterparts (equivalents), Bitcoin ETFs have been available earlier, have larger total assets under management, and have attracted deeper institutional buyer liquidity in history during periods of uncertainty.
Potential signals for market observers from ETF diversion
Capital flow data is an important indicator of recent institutional positions, but figures on a single trading day are only a narrow sample. Observers tracking this divergence should monitor subsequent daily traffic reports to determine whether the outflow from Ethereum continues or reverses, and whether the recovery in Bitcoin inflows can last over multiple days of trading.
From the perspective of the Bitcoin network, continued ETF inflows mean that there is less supply available on exchanges as fund custodians acquire and hold BTC outside the secondary market. If this dynamic persists, it will interact with Bitcoin's fixed issuance schedule and reduced block subsidies following the halving in April 2024, when the reward per block was reduced to 3.125 BTC. Regardless of the direction of single-day ETFs, these structural supply constraints still exist.
For Ethereum, the ETF outflow data contrasts with a period when it attracted strong institutional interest. Whether the $201.9 million exit was a profit-taking, reallocation to Bitcoin, or a broader portfolio rebalancing cannot be determined based on traffic data alone, and there is no single authoritative source that attributes the move to a specific reason.
