Coinbase Rebuilds Trading Platform: Coinbase Pro Returns with Derivbit Technology
Coinbase is reshaping its trading infrastructure and in the process has re-enabled a classic brand name: Coinbase Pro is expected to be restarted before the end of 2026. The restart will be part of the newly formed "Coinbase Global Exchange", which is built based on technology from options trading platform Deribit. For German investors, the brand name is far less important than a key number: leveraged transactions with spot margin of up to 10 times on large assets have been announced. However, whether this leverage limit can be implemented in Germany does not depend on Coinbase, but on how European regulators classify leveraged crypto derivatives.
Coinbase Global Exchange announced on October 6: Background and Details
On the technical level, Coinbase has completed its acquisition of Deribit. On October 1, 2026, customer data of Coinbase International Exchange was migrated to the Deribit platform, and the old platform only retains read-only functions since then. Coinbase Global Exchange was born. Coinbase described it in an Oct. 6 statement as "integrating the U.S. and international derivatives markets into a single pool of regulated liquidity." It should be pointed out that this is the company's self-statement and not the result of any regulatory body's determination.
This scale effect feeds back into the spot market, even if you never touch options. Market makers selling options usually hedge in the spot market. These hedging operations tend to amplify price fluctuations as bitcoin prices move towards large strike prices. According to market data from CoinPaprika, Bitcoin was around $82,570 on Friday morning and Ethereum was around $2,500. Both are in the range where many options expire.
According to Coinbase, U.S. institutional clients will gain access to Deribit options and perpetual futures through Coinbase Prime in the coming weeks. U.S. retail customers and eligible non-U.S. traders will follow up later or in the near future. All of the above content is announcement information, not already launched features.
Spot margin: Large assets are leveraged 10 times, and the remaining 5 times
The part that most directly touches retail investors is spot margin services. Coinbase announced that it will provide up to 10 times leverage on selected large assets and up to 5 times leverage on other backing assets, and the news was released before the actual Pro return.
The so-called spot margin means: You buy real cryptocurrency, but part of the money comes from loans from the platform. Unlike futures contracts, you own the underlying assets, you need to pay loan interest for this, and the platform requires collateral. If prices fall and there is insufficient collateral to cover positions, the platform will sell assets to protect its loans. At 10 times leverage, a 10% drop in price is arithmetically enough to trigger a forced liquidation, even without taking into account fees and interests.
Coinbase Advanced in the German market: Futures will be available from March 2026
For German users, Coinbase's leveraged trading is nothing new. Since spring 2026, Coinbase has provided futures services in European countries through Coinbase Advanced.
According to the trade publication Decrypt at the time of launch, the service will be launched in phases in 26 European countries, including Germany, France and the Netherlands, starting from March 9, 2026, and will operate through entities licensed under the EU Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID II). There, up to 10 times leverage can be provided for selected contracts such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, with a starting price of 0.02% per contract, and accounts can be recharged in euros or USDC.
The service covers three designs: contracts that expire monthly or quarterly, so-called perseveral-style futures, and indices that include large technology stocks, cryptocurrency-related stocks, and iShares Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs. So when Coinbase Pro returns, it will face a derivatives infrastructure that is already operating in Europe, rather than blank areas.
Perpetual style futures: five-year term rather than unlimited term
Behind this awkward label is a regulatory structure. Classic perpetual contracts traded on platforms outside the EU have no expiration date. The European version of Coinbase has a five-year deadline. In economic essence, this is almost unlimited for traders, because five years far exceeds the typical holding cycle. But formally, it is indeed a futures contract with an expiration date.
Funding rates: Cost of long-short balancing
Perpetual contracts and their European variants maintain prices near spot levels through balanced payments at both ends of the market. This funding rate is paid by the strong to the weak. When a large number of traders hold long positions, buyers pay. In leveraged positions, these ongoing costs tend to determine the final outcome more than the direction of the price, because they accumulate regardless of the price rise and fall and add up over several weeks.
Regulatory classification: 10 times leverage may become 2:1
The seal carried by the product is not determined by the name in the prospectus, but by the classification applied by the regulator. This is the key point in the disagreement between the U.S. announcement and German law. The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) issued a public statement on February 24, 2026 (reference number ESMA35-243228190-8024), stating that derivatives promoted as perpetual futures are likely to fall within the scope of national product intervention measures on contracts for difference (CFD). The statement emphasized that the key lies in the economic design, not the name of the transaction. Whether the product is traded on an exchange, uses funding rates, or voluntarily provides negative balance protection, in the eyes of the authorities, this does not affect this classification.
If these measures apply, Germany will comply with the general order issued by the Bavarian Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin) on July 23, 2019. For CFDs with cryptocurrency as the subject matter, the order requires an initial margin of 50% of the nominal value, which corresponds to a 2:1 leverage. In contrast, the margin for stocks as the subject matter is 20%, and the margin for major currency pairs is only 3.33%. As a result, cryptocurrencies are subject to the strictest asset class restrictions.
Other provisions on leverage caps
BaFin's order links the licensable nature of such products to further conditions that are as important in practice as leverage caps. Once account funds plus unrealized gains fall below half of the total initial margin, the position must be closed immediately. The customer's liability is limited to the balance of the corresponding trading account, so there is no obligation to increase funds beyond that account. Monetary incentives to enter contracts are prohibited (except for realized benefits and information and analytical tools). In addition, every advertisement must carry a prescribed risk warning.
In practice: The "10 times leverage" figure from the U.S. press release does not explain what your account in Germany will ultimately show. Anyone wishing to use leveraged products would be better off comparing the restrictions and costs actually granted by various providers rather than relying on the title of the product announcement.
MiCA does not apply here: Derivatives are regulated by MiFID II
In practice, this means being prepared: knowing the clearing price before entering, not after. Estimate the cost of capital during the period you expect to hold a position. And keep the principal small enough that a complete loss on that position will not put your portfolio out of balance.
German tax: Futures and coins are processed separately
In terms of tax, futures contracts and coins are two different worlds, which often surprises many people only when filing taxes. Proceeds from futures are regarded as investment gains and are treated as forward transactions, with no tax-free holding period regardless of how long the position is held.
In contrast, directly held coins are subject to a one-year holding period for private disposal transactions. The German Bundestag only rejected the proposal to abolish the deadline by a vote of 445 to 132 on October 9, 2026, so it remains in effect. Anyone who moves from a spot position to a leveraged contract has given up a tax advantage that is more important in long-term holding than any savings in handling fees. Spot margins fall somewhere in between because the coins are yours and the interest on the loan is assessed separately. This distinction should be discussed in a dialogue with tax advisers rather than relying on rules of thumb.
Conclusion: Coinbase Pro's regression depends on CFD classification
Before the launch of the new platform, there are still more questions to be answered for German investors than answers. The following three steps are worth taking:
- Check derivatives licenses held by providers : MiCA authorization alone is not enough, a securities license is also required. Which exchanges in Europe work with which regulators can be found in our overview of regulated crypto exchanges.
- Compare the true cost of spot purchases before seeking leverage : For long-term positions, spreads, order fees, and withdrawal fees are more important than maximum leverage. See the differences in our comparison of the best crypto exchanges.
- Record every leveraged position from the beginning : Forward transactions and spot purchases are processed separately in tax filings, and exchange statements may disappear after account migration. How to clearly combine the two, please refer to cryptographic tax tools and combination trackers.
The decisive news this week was not the return of brand names, but that the world's largest publicly traded crypto trading platform placed its derivatives business on top of a single infrastructure, while Europe is still determining under which rule book these products will be sold. The answer to this question determines whether the 10 times leverage here will become 2:1.
