Monad released an account key rotation proposal to support post-quantum encryption upgrades.
Monad released a draft that allows accounts to change their authentication keys without changing their wallet addresses, including upgrades to post-quantum cryptography solutions. The post-quantum solution is designed to withstand attacks from future quantum computers-computers powerful enough to crack the mathematical foundations on which current wallet signatures rely.
This core technique-changing wallet keys while leaving the address unchanged-has been implemented for many years because the contract owner can update it without moving the contract itself. Monad's proposal differs in scope: It plans to build this flexibility natively into each account, the same goal Ethereum outlined in its EIP-8141 proposal but has not yet been achieved, without having to be achieved through a separate smart contract wallet.
How the Monad wallet key rotation mechanism works
According to authors Kushal Babel and Jan Camenisch, the mechanism works by: the account address is fixed at the time of creation, derived from the hash value of the initial configuration, while maintaining a separate "authentication configuration" that is variable over the life of the account. The rotation key is performed through a proposed AuthConfigManager precompiled contract: the holder submits a new key that meets the account reconfiguration policy, and the change will take effect after the execution of Monad's three blocks is delayed. The policy also manages changes to itself, so any reconfiguration that could cause accounts to be locked out cannot be installed in the first place.
Babel and Camenisch are researchers at Category Labs, the core engineering team of Monad that was renamed from Monad Labs in 2024.
Comparison with Bitcoin and Ethereum
Monad's plan is in the middle of ambition and the most lagging in progress-compared to two other blockchains that have rethought wallet security for the same reasons.
In practice, this means that the differences across different chains are very obvious:
If Bitcoin's BIP-361 makes progress, the holder will eventually need to proactively transfer funds to a new address type before a certain deadline rather than upgrading in place.
If Ethereum's plan moves forward on time, individual accounts can choose to join the post-quantum signature scheme at a certain point after the hard fork in 2026, without having to transfer funds.
If Monad's draft becomes a formal proposal and is successfully implemented, the same opt-in upgrades can be achieved at the account level from the beginning, without the need for a separate smart contract wallet.
Currently, the last scenario is the most uncertain of the three. The post is labeled "Draft v1" and covers only the architecture, with implementation partially postponed. It has not yet been assigned a number in the Monad Proposal Registry, which currently tracks numbered proposals for twelve other agreement parts.
One user named Anzus_GemWallet has raised a practical concern critical to adoption in a forum response: Will holders with non-technical backgrounds get "a simple and clear default path and receive clear warnings before any important changes?" As of the time of writing this article, this question has not been answered in the discussion post.
The proposal deserves review after it passes through Monad's own review process. A numbered proposal with implementation specifications would mark a substantive step towards official release.
