Bitcoin and Ethereum ETF capital flows have taken an unexpected turn
The latest data shows that the capital flows of Bitcoin and Ethereum ETF in the U.S. market show completely different trends. On September 1, after a brief pause, the spot Bitcoin ETF suffered a net outflow, totaling US$236.47 million. Just the day before (August 31), these funds also recorded a net inflow of $216.7 million.
Bitcoin is facing challenges?
Currently, Bitcoin seems to be experiencing financial turmoil. Large-scale divestments are obvious, especially led by BlackRock's IBIT fund, which alone contributed US$201.18 million in outflows. Fidelity's FBTC fund also recorded a net outflow of $43.67 million, although Bitwise's BITB fund was a rare exception, achieving a positive inflow of $8.38 million. Other funds performed steadily with no change in net flows.
Ethereum ETF: Continue to improve?
In sharp contrast, the U.S. spot Ethereum ETF has continued its positive momentum. According to Trader T data, the net inflow of these products on September 1 was US$10.95 million, achieving net growth for the twelfth consecutive trading day.
Fidelity's FETH fund contributed significantly, receiving an inflow of US$4.81 million; while BlackRock's Ethereum ETF with pledge as its core-ETHB, led the way with an inflow of US$11.2 million. However, the Ethereum ETF is not without its gloom. Gray's ETHE Fund suffered an outflow of US$7.4 million, making it the only fund to experience negative growth. Other Ethereum funds maintained stable net activity.
Glassnode and Ark Invest jointly released an in-depth research report on blockchain dynamics. Its research points out that it takes only three organizations to significantly affect block production on key networks such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, which is in sharp contrast to Solana's situation where 19 organizations are needed.
Some opinions caution that such data should not be misunderstood as having direct control over the network. Instead, they reflect potential centralized concentration of power, especially if mining activities or pledge commissions are concentrated in a single hub.
Interestingly, differences in infrastructure deployment are also affecting decentralized perceptions. Bitcoin nodes benefit from a geographically balanced distribution, with 63% of nodes using Tor for anonymous communication. Ethereum relies more on cloud services, with 20% of its nodes hosted on Amazon Cloud Services. Solana's infrastructure is highly dependent on data centers.
A key conclusion of the study points out that assessing the degree of network decentralization requires looking at multiple dimensions, rather than just focusing on underlying entities. This includes:
carefully reviewing the roles and distribution of mining pools and pledge structures; analyzing the geographical deployment of nodes; and understanding the operational framework that supports the infrastructure.
Such assessments are critical to revealing the true decentralized nature of these blockchain networks and may influence future investors 'decisions when responding to this evolving digital landscape.
