Coinbase expands Canadian derivatives services to launch regulated cryptocurrency futures

Coinbase has expanded its derivatives business in Canada to launch regulated cryptocurrency futures to eligible professional and institutional traders. Perpetual contracts and term contracts have been added this time, and access to Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and other digital assets is also opened. Coinbase has also added commodity and index futures to broaden its financial services in international markets.

Bitcoin Futures expands access to Canadian derivatives

Coinbase Financial Markets now offers 23 perpetual and term cryptocurrency futures contracts to Canadian customers. These products cover Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and 20 other digital assets through regulated derivatives platforms. Therefore, eligible traders can use futures to hedge or participate in market fluctuations.

Bitcoin futures allow investors to gain Bitcoin price exposure without directly holding the underlying asset. Perpetual contracts allow traders to maintain positions without traditional expiration dates. Term contracts settle at a specified time, providing users with different tools to manage market risk.

Coinbase also offers mini contracts that reduce the capital required to enter certain positions. Traders can hold long or short positions with available leverage up to 10 times. During the promotion period, Coinbase charges a 0.02% fee per transaction, plus $0.11 per contract.

Ethereum Futures Broaden Market Tools

Ethereum Futures are part of Coinbase's Canadian cryptocurrency derivatives portfolio. These contracts provide eligible participants with another way to manage the risk of Ethereum price fluctuations. In addition, traders can combine perpetual and fixed-term contracts with existing spot market positions.

Coinbase Financial Markets is a futures commission dealer registered with the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission. In Canada, the company offers these contracts under international exemptions under applicable securities rules. However, Canadian access remains limited to qualified professional and institutional market participants.

The expansion comes against the backdrop of growing demand for regulated derivatives in the digital asset market. Coinbase reported that global cryptocurrency derivatives trading volume has reached approximately 4.4 times that of spot trading volume. As a result, regulated futures can provide Canadian market participants with a broader range of portfolio management tools.

Solana Futures helps Coinbase's extensive expansion

Solana, along with Bitcoin and Ethereum, is included in the range of digital assets covered by Coinbase's Canadian futures products. This addition provides eligible traders with another major cryptocurrency market through perpetual and fixed-term contracts. At the same time, the move also promotes Coinbase's expansion into broader financial markets.

Canada's derivatives business has also launched five commodity futures linked to gold, silver and oil. Coinbase has also introduced index products, including the COIN50, as well as its cryptocurrency and commodity contracts. As a result, the platform now connects multiple asset classes through one derivative product.

Coinbase Canada has operated as a restricted trader since April 2024 and continues to seek CIRO trader status. Webull Canada has also selected Coinbase's "crypto-as-a-service" platform for cryptocurrency trading and custody services. At the same time, Coinbase has begun expanding its U.S. equity trading business to eligible customers in the UK.

These developments support Coinbase's strategy of combining cryptocurrencies with traditional financial products. Its international expansion now covers derivatives, stocks, commodities, custody and other financial services. With the launch of its Canadian business, Coinbase has further consolidated its position in the regulated digital asset market.
