Two main ways for cryptocurrencies to generate revenue
Crypto-asset holders usually have two ways for their tokens to generate revenue: staking and yield farming. Both promise to generate passive income, but the path to realization and the attendant risks are very different. The former are rewarded for helping ensure network security, while the latter are paid for providing liquidity to traders. It is this core difference that determines the huge difference in the scale of potential gains and losses.

What is a cryptocurrency pledge?
Pledge refers to the locking of cryptographic assets to assist in the operation of a blockchain network. In return, the network will pay out rewards for the services you provide. This is similar to a "work-attribute deposit": you deposit tokens, and the network uses these tokens to confirm transactions and pays you for it. In fact, networks such as Ethereum and Solana rely on this mechanism to maintain network security without relying on energy-intensive mining.
How does pledge work?
You delegate tokens to a verification node or pledge pool. The network then treats your pledge as collateral to support the accuracy of the new block. If the verification node misbehaves (such as offline or evil), part of the pledged funds may be cut (Slashing), which will be explained in detail later.
Sources of pledge rewards
Rewards mainly come from new token issuance (sometimes called inflation) and part of online transaction fees. The specific rate of return depends on the number of people participating in the pledge at the same time.
Risk of pledge
- Risk reduction: If the verification node is offline or behaves dishonestly, part of the pledged funds may be lost.
- Lock-up period: Some networks need to lock up tokens for days to weeks before allowing withdrawals.

What is liquidity mining?
Liquidity mining refers to the investment of crypto assets into a decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol (usually a liquidity pool) to earn rewards from trading activity. Unlike pledges, you are not ensuring the security of the blockchain, but providing liquidity for the trading behavior of other traders.
How does liquidity mining work?
You deposit two tokens (such as ETH and stablecoins) into the pool. Traders exchange with the pool, and you will receive a portion of the fee for each transaction that passes through the pool.
Source of liquidity mining rewards
Reward comes from transaction fees plus incentive tokens issued by the agreement to attract deposits. The advertised nominal annualized rate of return (APY) is usually the result of combining these two components.
Liquidity pools and LP tokens
When you deposit funds, the agreement returns you Liquidity Provider (LP) tokens. These tokens are essentially a receipt that proves your share of the pool and a certificate for future withdrawals of funds.
Risk of liquidity mining

Pledges are mostly "hands-on" operations, while liquidity mining requires continuous attention. The risk of pledge is mainly concentrated on verification node behavior and token prices; while liquidity mining is superimposed on smart contract risks and pool mechanism risks. In short, pledge requires less of you in day-to-day management. Here's a point worth taking: for most beginners, the added complexity of liquidity mining isn't worth the meager APY boost.
Which is better: pledge or liquidity mining?
On the surface, the APY of liquidity mining looks larger, sometimes ten times the pledge rate. However, this is a wrong way of looking at it. The real question is not how much APY is advertised, but how much is left after deducting costs.
Why a higher APY does not necessarily mean more profits
Mining APY is usually paid out with young reward tokens. When the price of the token falls, even if the percentage on paper remains the same, your actual yield will fall.
How fees erode revenue
Gas fees are payable for every deposit, redemption and withdrawal on the chain. When the network is busy, these fees alone can swallow up the entire return on small positions.
How token price fluctuations change actual returns
When we measured typical pledge and mining settings, we found that the gap between "promotional" and "actual" returns was always wider on the mining side. Volatility in the price of any deposited asset can drive down your final result well below your nominal APY.

Pledge: US$1,000 Based on a nominal annualized rate of return of 8%, the gross reward generated within one year is approximately US$80 (before token price changes).
Liquidity mining: US$1,000 seems to be the clear winner based on the advertised 15% APY. But after deducting Gas fees, some volatile losses, and the depreciation of reward tokens, the actual return may be close to or even lower than the $80 pledged.
Methodology for this case
These data are for illustrative purposes only and are built based on typical industry rates and not real-time data derived from specific agreements:
- Pledge rate: 8% nominal annualized reward, which is a moderate level common in major proof-of-stake (PoS) networks.
- Liquidity Mining APY: 15% promotional interest rate, which is a typical hybrid number that combines transaction fees and incentive token rewards.
- Gas costs: are estimated to be 1% to 2% of the position (completing a full deposit-withdrawal cycle) and higher during network congestion.
- Unstable losses: Estimated at 2% to 4%, based on moderate divergence in asset prices between the two pools over a year.
- Reward token depreciation: Estimated at 3% to 5%, reflecting early selling pressure faced by newer incentive tokens.
It turns out that once these costs are added to the headline rate of 15%, the actual liquidity mining return may be at or below the pledged $80. Actual results still vary based on fluctuations in protocols, network conditions and token prices, so they should be viewed as a model rather than a forecast.
Fees and hidden costs
Pledges usually only charge a small verification node commission, usually 5% to 10% of the reward. Liquidity mining adds more costs: Gas deposit fees, Gas redemption fees, Gas withdrawal fees, and sometimes agreement performance fees. Basically, every extra step you take costs you.
A simple explanation of impermanent losses
When you are in the liquidity pool When the relative prices of the two tokens in the C change, an irregular loss will occur. Suppose you deposit the equivalent value of Token A and stablecoin. If the price of Token A doubles, the pool automatically rebalances, and when you retrieve the token, you will receive less Token A than if you held it directly. When you withdraw money at these distorted prices, the loss becomes permanent and distressing.
Who should choose pledge?
If you pursue simplicity, don't want to keep an eye on positions, and are willing to hold the underlying token for a long time, then a pledge is appropriate. This is also suitable for readers who prioritize predictable (albeit modest) returns rather than chasing larger numbers.
Who should choose liquidity mining?
If you already understand the DeFi mechanism and can monitor positions regularly, consider liquidity mining. At the same time, you need to accept smart contract risks and unpredictable losses in exchange for the opportunity to gain higher upside potential.
Can you combine pledge and liquidity mining?
It actually works. Some networks issue Liquid Staking Tokens , which represent your pledged positions but can still be traded. You can then deposit these liquidity pledge tokens into the liquidity mining pool and earn pledge rewards and mining rewards at the same time. But this does add an additional layer of smart contract risk on top of it.

Pledge is better than simplicity and predictability. Liquidity mining wins in its original upside potential (provided that everything is ready). Is it worth chasing the extra risk for bigger numbers on the screen? This is a question that every reader must answer for himself.
