MetaMask will operate independently, with Joseph Lubin as Chairman and CEO
Consensus Software Inc. It announced the split of its business into two independently operating companies, separating MetaMask's consumer wallet business from Consensus's protocol and institutional infrastructure businesses. After the split, MetaMask will operate independently under its original name, with Joseph Lubin as chairman and CEO; while the newly formed Consensus will retain Linea and other infrastructure businesses, and Lubin will serve as its executive chairman.
Strategic Focus: Consumer and institutional businesses diverge
According to MetaMask's announcement, the split aims to give the two companies a clearer strategic focus. MetaMask will focus exclusively on its consumer platform and continue to connect users with tokens, decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols and various networks. At the same time, Consensus will continue to develop enterprise-oriented (B2B) and enterprise-oriented and consumer-oriented (B2B2C) businesses, focusing on Ethereum technology, protocols, and enterprise-level infrastructure including Linea.
MetaMask stated that Consensus will remain an important channel partner in its wallet business. The announcements come on the occasion of MetaMask's 10th anniversary, which has more than 100 million downloads in approximately 190 countries around the world.
Seamless user experience
For existing MetaMask users, no action is required for this reorganization. After the split is completed, the application, assets, private keys and access rights remain unchanged. MetaMask emphasized that its "self-managed" model remains the core of the platform. On the consumer side, the focus is on allowing users to directly hold, transfer, use and manage assets.
In addition, MetaMask's recently launched "MetaMask Money Account" also reflects this concept. The account integrates automatic revenue, expense management and one-click trading functions in a self-managed balance. Although MetaMask claims that its cumulative trading volume has reached trillions of dollars, the announcement did not provide specific trading data.
Lubin leads cross-border and continues to deepen institutional business
The newly established Consensus sys will continue the agreement and the operation of institutional infrastructure, and Linea will continue to develop under this business segment, led by Lubin as executive chairman. Lubin will hold leadership positions at both companies, heading MetaMask and Consensus respectively.
Agresys pointed out that banks and asset management companies have currently moved some of their projects from the pilot phase to the production environment. In terms of institutional business, stablecoins and tokenized assets are important development directions.
Reiterates the mission of "open money"
MetaMask centers its consumer mission around "Open Money" and aims to achieve a form of money directly controlled by users. The company said the core of the concept lies in open networks, asset portability, self-custody and Internet-based access.
