Zcash fell 12% after a strong rebound, with US$27.6 million contracts cleared
As a cryptocurrency with privacy protection at its core and advanced encryption features, Zcash (ZEC) continued its recent correction on Friday. The asset had previously quickly climbed to annual highs, but traders subsequently reduced their exposure.
Sharp decline after historic gains
According to CoinGlass data, ZEC has traded between US$1,090 and US$1,120 in the past 24 hours, a drop of 10% to 12%. The volatility brought it back from a peak near $1,298 on September 9, although the token still maintained a double-digit gain of about 15% this week.
This violent shock ended Zcash's year-long historic bull market. During this period, ZEC surged more than 2,400% from below $500 in August and briefly approached the $1,300 mark early in the week.
This adjustment is accompanied by large-scale liquidation activities. Approximately $27.6 million in ZEC futures positions were forcibly closed in the past 24 hours. Open interest fell to $2.11 billion from a peak of nearly $2.9 billion, indicating that traders are significantly reducing leveraged positions as volatility increases.
Leverage and ETF dynamics analysis
Market participants pointed out that the current trend marks a reversal of Zcash's early "short squeeze" pattern. At the time, surging prices forced bearish traders to close their positions, with open interest exceeding $2.3 billion at one point. Today, the crowded bull camp is under pressure and bullish bets are gradually unwind (unwinding/unwinding).
The Zcash ETF (code: ZCSH) managed by Grayscale Investments held approximately US$533 million in assets on September 8, including approximately 464,515 ZECs. The fund's value has increased from $463 million a few days ago, partly due to the rapid rise in ZEC prices, rather than just the influx of new money.
Mini Dictionary:
Grayscale Zcash ETF (ZCSH): An exchange-traded fund that provides regulated cryptocurrency investment products that allow institutional and individual investors to gain market exposure to ZEC without directly holding assets.
Demand for ETFs, tighter market supply, and a large number of derivatives trading together pushed Zcash past the $1,200 mark until its recent reversal.
Key Prices and Market Outlook
Market observers are currently closely watching whether ZEC can stabilize in the US$1,050 to US$1,100 range. Maintaining this range could indicate buyers are absorbing selling pressure after an extended rally. On the other hand, a fall below US$1,050 will further increase liquidation risks and accelerate the deleveraging process of the entire cryptocurrency derivatives market.
ZEC's futures trading volume remained extremely high at US$8.3 billion in 24 hours, compared with approximately US$760 million in spot trading. This highlights the continuation of speculative activity despite recent fluctuations.
ZEC's price actions have entered critical areas. A sustained hold above $1,050 would signal demand after this year's extraordinary rally; loss of this support could lead to accelerated selling due to continued high leverage.
High open interest and huge daily trading volume suggest that leverage remains a significant factor and may amplify price movements in any direction in the coming days.
