Visa report: If bank-level security is available, the adoption rate of stablecoins in the United States is expected to increase to 56%
A new report released by Visa, one of the world's largest payment networks, shows that if digital assets can provide bank-level security, more Americans will consider using stablecoins for international transfers.
Class of bank protection enhances the appeal of stablecoins
Visa's Money Travels 2026 report found that if features such as fraud protection and deposit insurance are provided, the proportion of U.S. consumers willing to use stablecoins for overseas transactions may increase from the current 36% to 56%.
stablecoins are digital tokens pegged to stable assets, usually the U.S. dollar, designed to minimize the high price fluctuations seen by cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. However, unlike funds held in U.S. bank accounts, stablecoins are currently not covered by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).
Visa emphasized that the scenarios described in its investigation are hypothetical and do not mean that FDIC-like protections currently exist or are expected to be implemented soon.
Familiarity remains a major obstacle to widespread adoption
Surveys show that 56% of Americans have never heard of stablecoins, and many mistakenly believe that these digital assets will experience sharp price fluctuations like Bitcoin. Consumer trust in providers is also crucial. When stablecoins were provided by familiar financial institutions, interest rose to 45%. About 61% of respondents said they would trust traditional banks more, while 60% would prefer to choose global payment companies to provide digital currency services. Visa itself is a global financial technology company that specializes in providing payment solutions on a global scale.
The survey was conducted by research firm Morning Consult and surveyed a total of 45,445 participants in 20 markets between February 24 and March 2, of which 2,192 were U.S. residents.
Global trends and security concerns
As protective measures increase, the pattern of rising willingness to accept is not limited to the United States. In Latin America, when security features are presented as part of the product, the proportion of people willing to use stablecoins for cross-border transfers has increased significantly from 34% to 74%.
Security remains the overwhelming concern of potential users. Among U.S. senders, 36% said they had encountered fraud when making cross-border payments. In addition, 44% expressed concerns about the threat of AI-generated deep counterfeiting scams posing as relatives.
Vira Platonova, global head of Visa Direct, said: "Our research shows that for those who rely on this lifeline, the most important thing is trust."
Market Growth and Technology Adoption
