Who is Zooko Wilcox? The cryptopunk behind Zcash

Early years from DigiCash to Bitcoin

Before the advent of Zcash,@zooko was already at the forefront of digital currency. In 1996, he joined DigiCash, an early digital cash company founded by cryptographer David Chaum, whose goal was to enable online payments without revealing users 'identities. When DigiCash closed in 1998, Wilcox did not give up on the concept. Over the next decade, he continued to pursue this goal by participating in different projects such as Tahoe-LAFS, a distributed storage system built around privacy and security.

Then, the arrival of Bitcoin changed everything. In January 2009, Wilcox was one of the first people to publicly write about Bitcoin. Bitcoin founder Satoshi Nakamoto subsequently linked Wilcox's blog post on the official website of the Bitcoin project. This small but meaningful detail reflects his early intervention and the high importance he attached to this technology.

Building Zcash and gradually retreating into the background

By 2015, Wilcox turned his attention to a new issue: Bitcoin's lack of financial privacy. Every transaction on the Bitcoin network is visible on the public ledger, exposing the sender, recipient and amount. He co-founded the Electric Coin Company with a group of cryptographers and researchers, dedicated to building better solutions.
