The approval comes at a time when Coinbase submits an application to the CFTC for perpetual contracts for single U.S. stocks and ETFs, which have no precedent in China. If approved, the tools will operate through newly registered clearing entities, directly linking what Van Grack calls "many doors" to the advancing product pipeline.
Specifically for Bitcoin, Coinbase owns a regulated U.S. clearing house that expands the range of institutional investors who can access Bitcoin derivatives under a compliance framework. Registered clearing services reduce counterparty risk for prime brokers, pension-like funds, and registered investment advisers subject to fiduciary liability standards that prohibit uncleared exposure.
In addition, the CFTC is also strengthening its overall jurisdiction over cryptocurrency perpetual contracts. The agency applied to withdraw the lawsuit against CME (Chicago Mercantile Exchange), indicating that regulators believe such products fall within its existing jurisdiction. This stance supports rather than limits Coinbase's ambitions in the derivatives space.
This approval may signal the next step for Bitcoin
Van Grack's statement is directional rather than quantitative. In existing reports, no specific product release timetable, transaction volume targets or Bitcoin price mechanism are mentioned. The importance of this approval depends on which product applications pass the CFTC review and how quickly the review takes place.
