What is DEX?

A decentralized exchange (better known as DEX) is a peer-to-peer market where transactions are conducted directly between cryptocurrency traders. DEX implements one of the core possibilities of cryptocurrencies: facilitating financial transactions that are not hosted by banks, brokers, payment processors, or any other type of intermediary. The most popular DEXs, such as Uniswap and Sushiswap, leverage the Ethereum blockchain and are part of a growing suite of decentralized finance (DeFi) tools that can access a large number of financial services directly from compatible crypto wallets. DEX is booming-in the first quarter of 2021,$217 billion in transactions flowed through decentralized exchanges. As of April 2021, DeFi traders exceeded 2 million, a tenfold increase from May 2020.

How does DEX work?

Through a centralized exchange (or CEX), you can exchange fiat currency for cryptocurrency (and vice versa) or cryptocurrency-cryptocurrency pairs-say, some of your bitcoins are exchanged for ETH. You can also often take more advanced measures, such as margin trading or setting limit orders. But all of these transactions are processed by the exchange itself through an \"order book\" that determines the price of a specific cryptocurrency based on current buy and sell orders-the same method used by stock exchanges such as Nasdaq.

On the other hand, a decentralized exchange is just a set of smart contracts. They use algorithms to determine the prices of various cryptocurrencies and use \"liquidity pools\"-investors lock in funds in exchange for rewards similar to interest-to facilitate transactions.

Transactions on a centralized exchange are recorded in the exchange\'s internal database, while DEX transactions are settled directly on the blockchain.

DEXs are usually built on top of open source code, which means anyone interested can see exactly how they work. This also means developers can tweak existing code to create new competing projects--this is how Uniswap\'s code is adopted by entire DEXs with \"swap\" in names such as Sushiswap and Pancakeswap.

What are the potential benefits of using DEX?

There are a wide variety: If you are interested in finding popular tokens that are in their infancy, then DeFi is the best choice for you. DEX offers an almost unlimited range of tokens, from well-known tokens to strange and completely random tokens. This is because anyone can mint Ethereum-based tokens and create a liquidity pool for them, so you will find more reviewed and uncensored projects.

Can reduce the risk of hacking: Since all funds in DEX transactions are stored in traders \'own wallets, they are theoretically less vulnerable to hacking. What are the potential shortcomings?

The trickier user interface Navigating decentralized exchanges requires some expertise, and the interface is not always that easy-be prepared to do a lot of research, and don\'t expect the DEX itself to provide too much help. You usually have to look for drills or interpreters off-site. Caution is needed because irreparable mistakes may be made, such as sending coins to the wrong wallet. Another common problem is called \"unpredictable losses,\" which may result from pairing more volatile cryptocurrencies with less volatile cryptocurrencies in the liquidity pool. Risky coins Since most DEXs have large amounts of uncensored tokens, there are more scams and schemes to be vigilant about.
