Standard Chartered Bank launches institutional bitcoin and Ethereum spot trading in United Arab Emirates
Standard Chartered Bank has launched bitcoin and Ethereum spot trading services for institutional customers under its Dubai International Financial Center (DIFC) entity, further expanding the scope of its regulated digital asset business. The British multinational bank announced the move on September 3, 2026, saying it had become the first Global Systematically Important Bank (G-SIB) to provide spot trading of institutional digital assets in the United Arab Emirates. Standard Chartered also pointed out that it is currently the only global bank in the region to provide such services to global customers.
Trading through existing platforms
Eligible institutional customers can trade deliverable bitcoin (BTC/USD) and Ethereum (ETH/USD) spot through Standard Chartered Bank's electronic trading channels. The service integrates with the bank's existing trading platform and allows customers to trade digital assets using their preferred foreign exchange interface types.
Unlike derivatives, spot trading involves the purchase or sale of the underlying asset and physical delivery. Customers can choose to settle through their designated custodian, including digital asset custody services provided by Standard Chartered Bank in United Arab Emirates.
Based on digital asset services in United Arab Emirates
This new trading service enhances the execution capabilities of Standard Chartered Bank's previously launched digital asset custody functions. The hosting service was launched in United Arab Emirates in September 2024. Standard Chartered Bank initially launched spot trading for Bitcoin and Ethereum to institutional customers through its UK branch in July 2025, becoming the first global systemically important bank to provide spot trading for such deliverable cryptocurrencies. The launch in United Arab Emirates marks the official expansion of the service to the Middle East.
This United Arab Emirates business is provided by the Standard Chartered Bank DIFC entity and is regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA). The bank said this latest expansion is part of its broader digital asset strategy covering custody, trading and tokenization services. In addition, the bank also operates digital asset companies including Zodia Markets and Libeara.
Standard Chartered Bank's launch in the United Arab Emirates comes as financial institutions expand their participation in regulated cryptocurrency markets, particularly through services designed specifically for professional and institutional investors.
