ETH Europe's three major financial regulators warn: Quantum computing may threaten blockchain encryption security
On Wednesday, Europe's three major financial regulators issued a warning that advanced quantum computers could undermine the cryptographic system that ensures the operation of blockchain. This statement adds regulatory weight to the long-standing debate over the future of the cryptocurrency industry.
In the Fall 2026 Risk Update, the European Banking Authority (EBA), the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) and the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA)-collectively referred to as European Supervisory Authorities (ESAs)-stated that the threat could emerge before quantum computing achieves any viable commercial application and urged regulators and market participants to start preparing immediately.
Regulators 'Views
report describes quantum computing as a technology that "will soon transform the financial industry in key areas" that can play a role by optimizing financial processes, fraud monitoring and compliance, and pricing mechanisms. But authorities also added that the technology could also pose significant risks by undermining cryptographic systems widely used to secure communications, transactions, databases and blockchain.
European regulators note that these risks may "manifest themselves faster than any commercially feasible application," which means security threats to cryptographic systems may come sooner than the dividends promised by the technology.
Warnings in the broader risk outlook
