Uranium Finance

The first attack occurred on April 8, 2021. He used a set of round-robin transactions for Uranium smart contracts to obtain reward tokens far more than he deserved. He repeated this operation until he withdrew approximately $1.4 million and drained the pool of incentive funds.

Another larger invasion occurred on April 28, 2021. Spaleta took advantage of a contractual flaw that controlled its withdrawal limits and exploited the loophole in 26 separate liquidity pools. The Justice Department's initial indictment notice stated that Spaleta stole approximately $53.3 million in the attack, which prevented Uranium from continuing operations due to a lack of operating capital.

Prosecutors mentioned that about two weeks after the first exploit of the vulnerability, Spaleta wrote to an acquaintance saying that he had completed a "$1.5 million crypto robbery" and explained that "there is a loophole in smart contracts" that he exploited, then added: "Cryptocurrencies are fake online currencies anyway."

Prosecutors said that after the hack, he pressured Uranium to keep about $386,000 as a "vulnerability reward." The Justice Department characterized the deal as a cover, provided only to protect Spaletta from prosecution.

Is the "code is the law" defense valid in court?

The "code is law" theory holds that all behavior allowed by smart contracts is legal. The theory won a rare victory in May 2025, when a judge suspended the fraud conviction of Mango Markets user Avraham Eisenberg, in part because the platform had no terms stating that his actions were not allowed. Prosecutors are currently appealing the reversal of the verdict.

At a March 2026 hearing, a lawyer for one of the "MEV brothers" accused of participating in the $25 million Ethereum conspiracy cited Eisenberg's acquittal as a precedent in his case.

Still, the quick guilty verdict for Spaletta showed that at least one jury disagreed with the view that "exploiting loopholes in chain code is not theft."

What did Jonathan Spaleta do with whitewashed cryptocurrency?

Prosecutors said that Spaleta used the money from whitewashing to purchase high-end collectibles, including a Magic "Black Lotus" card worth about $500,000, 18 packs of Magic Alpha Supplement Pack sealed packaging with a total value of about $1.5 million, and a box of sealed boxes of the first edition of Pokémon Supplement Pack worth about $257,500, among other items.

He also spent approximately US$601,500 on a Roman coin engraved with the word "Eid Mar" to commemorate the assassination of Julius Caesar. According to reports, the purchase also included a piece of fabric from the Wright brothers 'original aircraft, which was carried to the moon by Neil Armstrong.

Authorities confiscated approximately $31 million in cryptocurrency related to the exploit in February 2025, and the March indictment marked the first time a defendant has been publicly named in the long-stalled investigation. Spaleta, 36, of Rockville, Maryland, surrendered when the charges were unsealed.
