On August 27, 2026, BitGo announced the acquisition of NYDIG's institutional trading arm
This move allows one of the largest regulated custodians in the cryptocurrency space to gain ready-made derivatives and financial businesses as banks and funds continue to integrate their digital asset businesses into fewer infrastructure partners. Through this acquisition, BitGo will absorb approximately 30 NYDIG employees and its institutional trading network.
From a broader market perspective, the deal highlights the growing tendency of institutions to seek custody, trading, financing and settlement services under a single regulated structure.
Why one-stop infrastructure wins institutional funding
This need is reflected in expenditure. Fireblocks 'Financial Grid Report released on April 14, 2026 is based on a January survey of 638 financial industry policymakers around the world and found that 88% of respondents have committed or plan to invest in digital asset infrastructure in 2026. Among institutions that have determined investment sizes, 53% have expenditures of at least $1 million.
NYDIG's trading platform provides structured products as well as derivatives, financing and capital markets services to corporations, asset managers, family offices and hedge fund managers. Combined with BitGo's wallet, custody and settlement infrastructure, BitGo is now able to provide more comprehensive coverage of the institutional transaction life cycle.
"Organizations are increasingly looking to work with trusted partners who can support the entire life cycle of digital assets."-- Mike Belshe, CEO and Co-Founder of BitGo, August 27, 2026
According to Belshe, through this acquisition, BitGo's infrastructure and trading capabilities will be significantly improved.
Advantages of BitGo
BitGo was first listed on the New York Stock Exchange on January 22, 2026 under the ticker symbol BTGO. For the quarter ended June 30, the company's revenue increased 79.6% year-on-year to $4.329 billion. The number of customers also increased by 26.2% to 5,833. BitGo disclosed its platform assets at US$65.2 billion. Based on adjusted data, which uses current quarterly median prices to calculate assets from previous reporting periods, the year-on-year increase was 31.4%. However, the company reported a net loss of $19 million, mainly due to unrealized losses of $18.8 million on its digital assets.
The regulatory framework is at the core of the BitGo proposal. The company runs the BitGo National Association of Banks and Trusts and announced on January 29, 2026 that it was the first publicly traded and federally licensed digital asset infrastructure provider. These are important considerations for institutions that focus on counterparty and custody risk.
Sources of trading demand
The acquisition comes at a time when regulated derivatives trading activity accelerates. CME Group said on August 4, 2026 that the average daily trading volume for all asset classes reached a record 27 million contracts in July, a year-on-year increase of 23%. The average daily trading volume of cryptocurrency contracts is 237,000, with a nominal value of approximately US$10.3 billion. The lending business showed the opposite trend. Galaxy Research reported on August 14 that crypto mortgages fell 16.78% to $56.16 billion in the second quarter. Galaxy believes the decline is gradual rather than a 2022-style crash. NYDIG's financing business allows customers to borrow fiat without selling bitcoin, now allowing BitGo to tap into a still-large but deleveraging market.
Risks of concern to regulators
Greater integration has also led to greater scrutiny. A report released on April 23, 2026 by the Financial Stability Institute of the Bank for International Settlements warned that large cryptocurrency companies are evolving into multi-functional cryptocurrency intermediaries that integrate custody, lending, derivatives and other services, which may lead to concentration of credit, liquidity and term risks. The report cited the 2022 Celsius and FTX events and the October 10, 2025 flash crash of cryptocurrencies as examples to illustrate how vulnerabilities can spread. As a result, BitGo's decision to place more services within the same agency makes its federal regulatory status more than just a marketing highlight.
For NYDIG, the deal marks its transformation into a vertically integrated power generation, Bitcoin mining and high-performance computing data center. The company said it has developed more than 3 GW of pipelines, of which more than 1 GW will be delivered in 2027 and 2028.
"We see one of the greatest opportunities for the future."-- NYDIG CEO Tejas Shah talks about the company's high-performance computing data center development business, August 27, 2026
