Bundesbank tests ZKsync Prividium, Matter Labs open source institutional engine

Matter Labs open-source Prividium licensing engine, Germany's Bundesbank took the lead in deploying

On September 8, Matter Labs announced that it will open source Prividium's licensing engine, making core software available for organizations to run, inspect and modify in their own environment. According to The Block, Deutsche Bundesbank is the first institution to test and deploy the engine in its own infrastructure.

This move transforms the core part of Matter Labs 'institution-level blockchain services from vendor-controlled software to publicly available code. It gives organizations such as banks a way to operate the licensing layer in their own technical environment, while retaining access to commercial tools when needed.

Federal Bank tests new open source licensing engine

ZKsync announced on September 8 that Prividium's licensing engine has been released as open source software. Matter Labs is the developer of ZKsync. Federal Bank's testing and deployment reportedly made it the first public institutional user of the new open source engine. Existing reports did not detail the scope of the central bank's test, the applications involved or the timetable for wider use.

For institutions that are evaluating permissioned blockchain infrastructure, this release means that the relevant core code can be inspected and modified internally, rather than just accessed through proprietary agreements with its developers.

Open source core separates chain operations from commercial tools

The Block reports that the engine is planned to be a stand-alone component that would allow agencies to operate licensed-style chains using public code without having to enter commercial agreements. Matter Labs doesn't offer the entire agency package for free: management tools and integrations are still commercial products. As a result, organizations can use third-party software for management or connectivity while retaining direct control of their core infrastructure; simply acquiring the engine does not determine the configuration, governance, or integration of the deployment.

Privacy Protection and Ethereum Settlement

According to Matter Labs 'technical description, Prividium aims to retain transaction data within the institution's infrastructure, use zero-knowledge proof to verify the correctness of transactions, and anchor settlement to Ethereum.

This open source release only covers the licensing engine; management tools and integrations are still outside the core and are commercial products.
