Ten years in review: Significant differences between Bitcoin and gold
Ten years later, both Bitcoin and gold have achieved appreciation, but the performance gap between the two is huge. For investors who had invested $1,000 each, the results were in stark contrast.
Gold: Solid performer
According to data, on September 9, 2016, the trading price of gold was US$1,328.15 per ounce. As of September 9, 2026, spot gold prices are close to US$4,400 per ounce.
At that time, about 0.75 ounces of gold could be purchased for US$1,000. Today, the value of this gold is about US$3,313, an increase of about 231%, more than three times the original principal amount. In short, if US$1,000 were invested in gold in September 2016, its value would reach approximately US$3,313 today, achieving more than tripling gains in ten years.
This sharp increase mainly occurred in the recent term. According to the World Gold Council, gold hit a record high in 2026 due to heavy purchases by central banks and increased demand for safe-haven.
Bitcoin: The far leading winner
Bitcoin's operating logic is completely different from gold. According to historical data, on September 9, 2016, Bitcoin closed at US$622.86. Today, the transaction price is close to $78,500. That original $1,000 could buy about 1.61 bitcoins, and the current value is about $126,000.
This means a return of more than 12,000%, which is about 38 times the return of gold over the same period of time. As a result, the $1,000 Bitcoin invested in 2016 is now worth approximately $126,000, achieving a return of 126 times, turning pocket money into a small fortune.
Since then, Bitcoin has evolved from a little-known experiment into a mainstream asset, widely accepted by businesses, governments and the U.S. spot ETF launched in January 2024.
Two very different investment paths
The two trends are very different. The climb of gold has been relatively smooth and is currently at historical highs. Bitcoin's path is volatile, experiencing multiple sharp corrections of more than 70%; at a level of about $78,500, its price is about 38% lower than its record high in 2025.
If US$2,000 was originally divided equally between Bitcoin and gold, the total value would now be approximately US$129,000, with the vast majority of the proceeds coming from Bitcoin.
