The challenge of certainty and randomness in blockchain

Blockchains are deterministic systems: with the same inputs, they always produce the same outputs. This certainty is critical to consensus mechanisms and security, but it raises immediate issues when applications require unpredictable results to ensure fairness. In principle, any value extracted from block data may be manipulated by the party building the block, making on-chain lottery, sweepstakes, and the NFT casting process susceptible to manipulation.

Chainlink VRF (verifiable random function) is a proven and verifiable random number generator that enables smart contracts to access random values without sacrificing security and usability. The key difference from the simple method is that it comes with a proof of encryption. For each random request,@chainlinkVRF generates one or more random values and provides cryptographic proof of how those values are determined. The certificate is published and verified on the chain before using any application that consumes this random value.

Why proof is important

This process helps ensure that results are not tampered with or manipulated by any single entity, including oracle operators, smart contract developers, users, miners, or block builders. Due to its cryptographic structure, attempts to change the output will invalidate the certificate, making the manipulation detectable rather than unknowable.

VRF is widely used in a variety of on-chain scenarios, including blockchain-based lottery tickets, GameFi NFT with random attributes, and random selection of nodes or verifiers. This demand spans multiple industries: any protocol that relies on unpredictable results to ensure fairness has an incentive to use verifiable random sources rather than relying on block data or centralized data streams.

Payment method for request fees

VRF v2.5 provides two ways to request randomness. In subscription mode, developers create a subscription account, recharge it with native tokens or $LINK, and then connect multiple consumable contracts to the account. After each random request is completed, transaction costs are calculated and deducted from the subscription balance. Under the direct funding model, expendable contracts pay fees directly using native tokens or $LINK on each request. Flexibility in payment currencies lowers the development threshold for building apps on networks where $LINK is less liquid.
