Bitwise closes Dogecoin ETF less than a year after launch
Bitwise announced that it will voluntarily close, delist and liquidate its Dogecoin ETF in October 2026. The move marks the end of Wall Street's first attempt to package Meme Coin, the Internet's most popular currency, into a standard exchange-traded product (ETF).
According to Bitwise Investment Advisers, LLC's Form 8-K filing on September 10, 2026, the company notified the New York Stock Exchange Arca of its decision to close the fund and withdraw its shares from the Securities Exchange Act registration. The trading code of this ETF is BWOW.
Closure schedule and key nodes
Bitwise announced the launch of BWOW on November 25, 2025, and began trading the next day. This means that from launch to the expected liquidation in October, the fund's duration is less than one year, confirming its "short-lived" characteristics.
This closure involves two key dates:
- Before the market opens on October 15, 2026: Trading in the secondary market and the creation of new BWOW shares will cease. After that, the shares will no longer be traded in the secondary market.
- On or shortly after October 22, 2026: Fund assets will be liquidated and the proceeds will be distributed to holders on or around the same day.
Impact on Holders
If you hold BWOW shares, please note the following important matters:
- No need to actively sell: You do not need to trade before trading. The remaining shareholders will automatically receive a cash distribution based on net asset value (NAV) on the liquidation date, and the funds will be deposited into your brokerage cash account.
- Tax consequences: filings states that these allocations are considered taxable events. For holders who buy at different prices, the proceeds will be recorded as a taxable transaction rather than an unconscious transfer.
- Exit Window: The exchange sale window closes on October 15. Since then, liquidation is no longer an active choice in the open market, but occurs automatically around October 22 based on the net asset value at the time of liquidation.
Note: Although there are unconfirmed reports that the ETF has been closed early, official documents clearly indicate that the trading suspension is scheduled for October 15, and the allocation is expected to take place around October 22.
Analysis of reasons for closure
Bitwise did not specify the specific reasons in the document, but only described them as voluntary delisting and withdrawal of registration, and did not mention weak demand, poor returns or regulatory pressure. However, the data reveals that the fund is extremely small:
- Net Assets: As of September 8, 2026 (i.e., two days before the closure notice was issued), BWOW reported net assets of only $721,815.
- Positions: 8,195,053.02 DOGE shares are held in the trust, with a market value of approximately $721,877.64, distributed among the only 50,000 outstanding shares.
- Weak trading conditions: The 30-day median bid-ask spread was 0.61%, and the premium/discount on the same date was-1.29%.
In addition, the dogcoin market environment is also relatively weak. DOGE was trading at $0.084 at the time, falling about 3.2% within 24 hours, giving it a market value of approximately $13.1 billion. Although the overall crypto market sentiment is in the "greedy" range (Fear and Greed Index is 69), this is not a specific indicator for DOGE.
Industry background comparison
The closure comes as Bitwise focuses its resources on other successful products. The company's Solana ETF assets have exceeded US$1 billion, and XRP funds have exceeded US$500 million, and BWOW has never approached this size. At the same time, Bitwise is also expanding its Bitcoin ETP business in the UK, demonstrating the company's current strategic priorities.
BWOW is not registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940 and therefore never enjoyed investor protection under that act. As the pressure on fee flows intensifies, which memo products will survive and whether DOGE will have the opportunity to try US ETF packaging again remain the focus of market attention.
