MoneyGram launches stablecoin Visa Card based on the Stellar Network

MoneyGram has launched the MoneyGram Card, a Visa card supported by stablecoin based on the Stellar Network. Although the first launch market is limited to Colombia and does not yet include the physical card and ATM cash withdrawal functions the company has promised to launch later this year.

MoneyGram's stablecoin Visa card allows customers to hold a dollar-denominated stablecoin balance and make purchases wherever Visa is accepted. However, a number of practical details, including the specific types of tokens to which the card is linked, remain unclear.

Announces stablecoin Visa Card on Stellar Network

MoneyGram announced the MoneyGram Card on September 10, 2026, describing it as a stablecoin-backed Visa product embedded in its existing global payment network. The release timestamp is 10:30 a.m. Eastern Time.

Core Points

  • MoneyGram launched a Visa card based on stablecoins on September 10, 2026, which will be initially only available in Colombia.
  • The card combines Rain's card infrastructure, Crossmint's wallet capabilities, and Stellar network.
  • Physical cards with ATM access are scheduled to be launched at the end of 2026 and are not part of the virtual cards on the day of release.

The initial product was a virtual card, which MoneyGram positioned as an extension of existing application services. Customers hold what the company calls a "stable dollar" balance and can spend anywhere Visa is accepted, including online shopping, physical store purchases and cross-border transactions.

Anthony Soohoo, Chairman and CEO of MoneyGram, said MoneyGram Card builds on the strengths of the company's global payment network, integrating stable dollar balances, daily consumption and cash access capabilities into the MoneyGram experience that customers already use and trust. This statement is a company comment by stakeholders and not an independent analysis.

From a cautious perspective, the scope of this release is narrower than the title suggests. Initially limited to Colombia, other markets will be launched in the coming months, and the release materials do not specify the legal issuing entity or new regulatory approval. The card issuance follows MoneyGram's broader blockchain trajectory, including the previous expansion of cryptocurrency cash recharge support for Solana.

How Visa and Stellar integrate into the card system

The card combines three main players: Rain's card infrastructure, Crossmint's wallet capabilities, and the Stellar network. MoneyGram positions Stellar as the underlying blockchain and Visa as the acceptance channel, allowing customers to add virtual cards to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet and manage spending within the MoneyGram app.

It is worth noting that the announcement did not name specific tokens. Although MoneyGram's Stellar app has historically used Circle's USDC, the specific stablecoin denomination of the current card is not established in the release materials.

This difference is critical because holding a stable dollar balance on Stellar is not the same as a merchant receiving a stable coin. Visa acceptance means the usual authorization and settlement process, and the obtained materials do not describe the conversion mechanism, foreign exchange spreads, and how to convert on-chain balances into card authorizations. These payment process details are missing from existing information rather than confirmed functions.

Stellar's partnership predates this card. Previous partnership announcements noted that Stellar, Crossmint and USDC are providing support for the MoneyGram app's stablecoin balance, which has been launched in Colombia and extended to El Salvador, but this describes app services, not card availability in El Salvador. Rival money transfer platforms are also testing similar tracks, such as Western Union's stablecoin money transfer pilot project.

Card availability, qualification requirements and fees

At the time of release, the card was a virtual card and was only available in Colombia, and the company said it will expand to more global markets in the coming months. Customers need to register and manage cards within the MoneyGram app, so it is not yet possible to confirm registration access outside of Colombia.

MoneyGram's product page states that there are no monthly or annual fees for the card and that customers must complete authentication to activate the card. "No monthly or annual fees" does not mean that all transactions are free; the complete fee schedule, foreign exchange spreads and trading limits are not disclosed in the materials obtained.

The product page also states that users can track pending charges, transactions, refunds and rejections, freeze or unfreeze cards, and receive transaction notifications. At the time of release, the method described to obtain cash was to transfer funds from MoneyGram balance to yourself and collect local currency at MoneyGram outlets.

Physical cards supporting ATM withdrawals are planned to be launched by the end of 2026. This is a feature on the roadmap rather than a confirmed day-of-release feature, so potential users evaluating cash access today should consider a "self-transfer" route rather than assuming that ATM cash withdrawals can be made directly through a card.

Market background and industry reaction

XLM (Stellar's native token) trading price was US$0.176186, down 2.44% in 24 hours, and its market value was close to US$6.13 billion. A causal relationship between card announcements and token price changes has not been established.

The overall encryption sentiment is in the "greedy" zone, with the Fear Greed Index reading 56 on September 11, 2026. This indicator reflects overall market conditions and is not specific to XLM or this release.

On a positive note, exchange Bitso welcomed the release on September 11 and regarded it as good news for Stellar. This is a reaction from a single exchange account and does not establish Bitso as a card partner;MoneyGram's release only named Rain and Crossmint.

This release adds to a series of actions launched by stablecoins and asset management products in the industry, from exchange tools such as Kraken's kHYPE tokens to OKX's smart portfolio. For MoneyGram, specific milestones that need to be focused on in the near future are the launch of physical cards at the end of 2026 and the market expansion of company logos beyond Colombia.
