MoneyGram launches stablecoin support card to reshape the global payment experience
On September 10, MoneyGram announced the official launch of the "MoneyGram Card". This is a bank card backed by stablecoins that allows customers to hold stable balances denominated in U.S. dollars and make purchases or withdraw cash anywhere accepted by Visa. The card is designed to provide services to eligible customers around the world, supporting use in online, physical stores and cross-border scenarios.
This move marks the 85-year-old remittance giant's further expansion into the field of stablecoin payments, integrating daily consumption functions into the MoneyGram application that customers are already familiar with and trust.
Dollar Stable Balances and Visa Wide Acceptability
The card gives customers the ability to hold and use a stable balance in U.S. dollars for daily consumption. Users can also choose to add it to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet for contactless payments, faster checkouts, and online shopping. Within the MoneyGram app, customers can register their cards with just a few clicks and centrally manage balances and expenditures in the same interface.
To facilitate cash withdrawal, customers can transfer funds from MoneyGram balance and exchange them for local currency at nearby MoneyGram outlets. The company said that this process seamlessly connects fund receipt, management and consumption, improving the user experience.
Anthony Soohoo, Chairman and CEO of MoneyGram, said in a statement: "We are committed to providing our customers with more freedom and control so that they can efficiently manage their money on one platform. MoneyGram Card relies on our strong global payment network to further enhance its service capabilities."
Technical Architecture: Integration of Rain, Crossmint and Stellar
MoneyGram Card is supported by Rain Company and combines Crossmint's wallet capabilities with the technical advantages of Stellar Network. MoneyGram pointed out that this technology stack enables fast, easy and instant access to funds.
In the past few months, MoneyGram has been expanding stablecoin application scenarios, including providing USDC withdrawal services in Southeast Asia. The card launched this time is seen as a natural extension of its global payment network.
is the first to be launched in Colombia and plans to be promoted globally.
According to the company's announcement, MoneyGram Card will be officially launched in Colombia from now on, and plans to expand to more international markets in the next few months. In addition, the company plans to launch a physical card option by the end of 2026 to support cash withdrawals from automated teller machines (ATM) and offline consumption in areas with low acceptance of digital cards.
Currently, MoneyGram serves more than 60 million active customers in more than 200 countries and regions around the world through nearly 500,000 retail outlets and a digital network covering billions of terminals. The company said that this huge business layout will provide strong support for the global large-scale development of MoneyGram Card.
