Greek police smashed a cryptocurrency pyramid scam involving approximately US$8 million

According to a statement issued by the Greek police on October 2, the Greek police arrested 17 suspects and destroyed a criminal organization suspected of operating a cryptocurrency pyramid scam. The scam defrauded approximately $8 million from at least 10,000 participants.

Investigators in the northern city of Katerini led the months-long investigation. The operation ultimately ended in coordinated raids in nine regions of Greece, where police seized large amounts of cash, computers and dozens of storage devices on the spot.

Scam structure that promises to double returns within 50 days

Police said the gang operated through a seemingly legitimate corporate structure and online platform, using false guarantees to mislead investors, claiming that its initial capital would double within 50 days. The organization has been active for some time since 2025, with an estimated approximately US$8 million flowing into the platform and recruiting at least 10,000 participants.

Members systematically commit to providing high returns and extremely low or zero risk returns, while other members focus on attracting new investors to increase their own returns. This hierarchical structure gives the operation a typical pyramid character. In addition, the organization has not obtained any license from the competent authority.

This crackdown continues the law enforcement model against similar scams. Previously, Ukraine police had smashed a cryptocurrency fraud ring that stole about US$1 million a month.

Coordinated arrest operation across nine regions

Given that the platform is estimated to have recruited at least 10,000 participants, the number of victims currently identified may increase further. This case reflects the increased efforts of law enforcement agencies to crack down on cryptocurrency investment fraud. Previously, cryptocurrency fraud investigations across Europe have combined on-chain tracking with cross-border coordination, forming a broader law enforcement synergy.
