The International Monetary Fund approves approximately US$138 million in loans to El Salvador

Although it failed to fully meet some performance criteria, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved the immediate release of approximately US$138 million to El Salvador. The money comes from the country's $1.4 billion financing plan.

The IMF said in a press release that its executive board completed its second and third reviews of El Salvador's 40-month Extended Financing Facility (EFF) on Thursday.

Although certain performance criteria were not met, including on Bitcoin accumulation, the International Monetary Fund approved exemptions in view of strong corrective measures and new commitments.

The agency noted progress made on financial sector reform, fiscal transparency, anti-money laundering/counter-financing of terrorism (AML/CFT) reform, and the transfer of majority ownership and control of the government-held "Chivo" Bitcoin wallet to private operators.

The International Monetary Fund said: "It will continue to work to reduce state participation in bitcoin-related activities, strengthen crypto asset supervision and governance, and improve transparency on public sector crypto asset holdings." The agency added: "In addition to recorded donations, there are no plans to accumulate further bitcoin."

Background information: Bitcoin accumulated in El Salvador after the first review did not use public funds
