German authorities seize millions of euros in assets belonging to "crypto queen" Ruja Ignatova
German authorities have successfully controlled millions of euros in assets allegedly belonging to OneCoin founder Ruja Ignatova. The funds will be used to compensate victims of the fraud scheme, and the woman, known as the "Crypto Queen," is still wanted around the world.
Bielefeld prosecutors seize huge amounts of money
The Prosecutor's Office in Bielefeld, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, announced that it had seized approximately 10.1 million euros (approximately 11.4 million US dollars) of Ignatova's assets. The German News Agency (DPA) quoted the office in a statement on Monday as saying the operation had been successful.
The German prosecutor further revealed that the funds came from the sale of two apartments in London. The two properties, which include a luxury penthouse and adjacent apartments in Kensington, are valued at between £ 12.5 million and £ 13.5 million. The properties were previously purchased through shell companies, which authorities believe came from the criminal proceeds of OneCoin, a $4.5 billion cryptocurrency scam she co-founded and operated.
After Ruja Ignatova was identified as the owner of the property in the wealthy neighborhood, the two properties were listed for sale in early 2023 at the request of the Bielefeld Prosecutor's Office. This summer, a court in Guernsey, where the official owner is located, ruled to seize another £ 8.59 million in Ignatova's bank account on the island. The funds will also be returned to the Federal Republic to further compensate investors deceived by the notorious pyramid scheme.
OneCoin Scam and Global Manhunt
OneCoin was founded in 2014 and operates as a multi-layered marketing network with global influence that promotes a fake cryptocurrency called OneCoin and promotes it as a "Bitcoin killer." According to the company's own statistics, more than 3 million people have invested money in this huge Ponzi scheme, and as of the third quarter of 2016, the total investment has exceeded US$4 billion.
The whereabouts of the mastermind are unknown, and global manhunt continues
Ruja Ignatova, who holds a German passport, was last seen in late 2017 when she was flying from the Bulgarian capital Sofia (her birthplace) to Athens. She disappeared shortly after an arrest warrant was issued in the United States. Currently, the FBI, Europol and Interpol have all issued wanted notices for her.
Despite occasional reports of her whereabouts, including some hints that she may still be in Greece, she has not yet been arrested or found, and the global manhunt continues. The so-called "crypto queen" is believed to be the mastermind of one of the largest scams in the history of OneCoin, but she is not the only mastermind.
OneCoin co-founder Karl Sebastian Greenwood, who holds Swedish and British citizenship, was arrested in 2018. He pleaded guilty in 2022 and was sentenced to 20 years in prison for wire fraud and money laundering. Ignatova's brother Konstantin, who took over the project after her disappearance, was eventually arrested in the United States in 2019. He pleaded guilty to charges involving OneCoin while seeking witness protection.
In September 2025, German prosecutors filed a lawsuit against Ignatova. The German news agency warned that the move was aimed at preventing so-called crimes from being held accountable due to the expiration of the statute of limitations. "The crimes she is accused of will expire the statute of limitations in 2031." The German news agency stressed this week that the charges included establishing a pyramid scheme.
The company that invented and promoted OneCoin cryptocurrency is headquartered in Graven, western Germany, and has an office in Sofia. Since her disappearance on October 25, 2017, Ruja Ignatova has been on the list of several internationally wanted fugitives, and the global search is still underway. German law enforcement agencies are calling on anyone who knows his whereabouts to provide clues to help arrest him.
